Description
Castello di Meleto Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Trebbio 2018 is a single-vineyard expression that captures the pure character of Sangiovese from one of Meleto’s most prized crus. Crafted only in top vintages, this Gran Selezione sits at the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid, offering depth, precision and terroir-driven elegance. As the third Gran Selezione from Castello di Meleto, Vigna Trebbio continues the estate’s mission to showcase the many nuanced faces of Sangiovese in Gaiole in Chianti.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Vigna Trebbio shows a deep, luminous ruby red with garnet highlights developing at the rim. The nose is refined and layered: violet and dried rose petals mingle with ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange, supported by notes of sweet spices, tobacco leaf, cedar, and a subtle earthy, ferrous minerality typical of classic Chianti Classico.
On the palate, this Gran Selezione is both taut and generous, with a vibrant core of red and black cherry, plum skin and pomegranate, framed by fine, chalky tannins. Hints of balsamic herbs, leather, cocoa powder and savory spice emerge with air, carried by a lively acidity that gives the wine lift and length. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of cherry, Mediterranean herbs and subtle oak. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, the 2018 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and dried flowers over time.
Production
Vigna Trebbio is a dedicated cru vineyard within the Meleto subzone of Chianti Classico, where Sangiovese thrives on hillside exposures, rocky galestro and alberese soils, and a classic Tuscan mix of warm days and cool nights. The vineyard also includes historic rows of Ciliegiolo and Colorino, indigenous varieties traditionally used in the Chianti Classico blend and preserved here as a living inheritance of local biodiversity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best clusters are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin structure. The wine then matures in quality oak (often a mix of large casks and barrels) for an extended period, allowing it to meet the stringent aging requirements of the Gran Selezione designation and to fully integrate its fruit, structure and spice before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is an excellent partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and richly flavored dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, roast pork with herbs, game birds, wild boar ragù, or long-simmered tomato-based pasta sauces. Mature cheeses such as aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano also make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or simply opening the bottle in advance will be sufficient.
Producer
Castello di Meleto is a historic estate located in Gaiole in Chianti, one of the original communes of Chianti Classico, with roots that trace back to the Middle Ages. Centered around a striking castle and surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodlands, the winery has long played a role in shaping the identity of Sangiovese in this part of Tuscany. In recent decades, Castello di Meleto has focused on valorizing its distinct vineyard sites, embracing cru bottlings and the Gran Selezione category to highlight the diversity of terroirs within the estate.
