Description

Castello di Fonterutoli Siepi 2022 is a benchmark Tuscan red that unites the depth of Merlot with the vibrancy of Sangiovese in a single, sculpted wine. Sourced from the historic Siepi estate—owned by the Mazzei family since 1435—this cuvée is crafted to showcase perfect harmony between elegance, power, and complexity. Its distinctive microclimate and forward-thinking vineyard choices from the 1980s have made Siepi one of the region’s most admired modern classics.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Siepi 2022 shows a deep, intense ruby color with youthful purple hues at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with ripe dark cherries, blackberries, and plum, layered with notes of violet, wild herbs, tobacco leaf, and hints of cedar, cocoa, and sweet spice from carefully judged oak. On the palate, the Merlot brings a velvety, generous core of dark fruit, while the Sangiovese contributes lift, savory tension, and a fine, chalky tannin structure. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and cassis are intertwined with notes of leather, graphite, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a touch of espresso. The wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with lively acidity and a long, refined finish that tapers off on mineral and spicy notes. While approachable in its youth with some air, Siepi 2022 has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.

Production
The Siepi vineyard sits in the heart of Tuscany near Castellina in Chianti, at altitude and on well-drained, stony soils rich in galestro and limestone that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The site benefits from a unique microclimate: warm, sun-drenched days balanced by cooler nights, ensuring slow, even ripening and superb aromatic development. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to preserve berry integrity and sorted rigorously before vinification. Merlot and Sangiovese are vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for tailored extraction and gentle handling of the skins. Following fermentation and maceration, the wines are matured in quality oak (often a mix of new and used barriques) before blending, resulting in a wine that marries concentration and polish with the unmistakable character of its Tuscan terroir.

Food & Serving
Siepi 2022 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. It also shines alongside truffle pasta, mushroom risotto, or roasted root vegetables with herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and soften the tannins, especially if served within the first 5–7 years from vintage.

Producer
The Mazzei family has been rooted in Tuscan winegrowing since the early 15th century, with the Siepi estate under their ownership since 1435, making it one of the region’s most storied properties. From their base at Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti Classico, the Mazzei have long been recognized as innovators and guardians of local tradition, helping shape the modern identity of Tuscan wine. Their decision in the early 1980s to plant Merlot alongside Sangiovese at Siepi was pioneering, anticipating the rise of top-tier Tuscan blends that express both international appeal and strong regional character. Today, Siepi is widely regarded as one of Mazzei’s flagship wines and a reference point for premium Tuscan reds on the world stage.
