Description

Castello di Fonterutoli Siepi 2021 is one of Tuscany’s modern icons, a finely tuned blend of Merlot and Sangiovese that captures the best of both grapes in a single, compelling wine. From a historic single estate owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Siepi is renowned for its seamless balance of elegance, power, and layered complexity. In the 2021 vintage, the unique microclimate of this famed “cru” once again delivers a wine of remarkable depth and refinement.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Siepi 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with violet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and polished, opening with dark cherries, blackberries, and ripe plum from the Merlot, intertwined with Sangiovese’s signature notes of wild red berries, dried flowers, and a touch of blood orange. Hints of violets, tobacco leaf, sweet baking spices, cedar, and a delicate graphite/mineral edge add further complexity as it unfolds in the glass. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a velvety, enveloping texture from the Merlot supported by the lively acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins of Sangiovese. Juicy black and red fruits are layered with cocoa, espresso, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle savory, earthy undertone that speaks clearly of its Tuscan origins. The finish is long and persistent, with energy, precision, and a mouthwatering freshness that invites another sip. Siepi 2021 is already impressive in its youth but has excellent aging potential; under proper cellaring conditions, it should continue to develop greater aromatic complexity and tertiary notes over 12–18 years, and likely beyond in top vintages.

Production
Siepi comes from a single historic vineyard near Castellina in Chianti, within the rolling hills of central Tuscany. Here, altitude, well-drained marl and limestone soils, and a pronounced diurnal temperature range create an ideal terroir that tempers summer heat and preserves freshness and aromatic intensity. The Merlot and Sangiovese parcels are carefully tended and harvested by hand, typically in separate passes to ensure each variety is picked at optimal ripeness. After meticulous sorting, the grapes are vinified separately: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, often with a combination of stainless steel and concrete to preserve purity of fruit while allowing for gentle extraction of color and tannin. Following maceration, the wines are aged—traditionally in a high proportion of French oak barrels and tonneaux, part new and part used—to add texture, complexity, and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit. The final blend, usually close to a 50/50 split of Merlot and Sangiovese, is assembled after barrel aging and given further time in bottle before release to ensure harmony and integration.

Food & Serving
Siepi 2021 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes and refined Tuscan cuisine. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised beef, venison, and game birds, as well as truffle dishes, risotto with porcini mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. For the best expression, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). The wine benefits from aeration in its youth; decanting for 1–2 hours before serving will help open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, revealing its full aromatic range and textural depth.

Producer
The Mazzei family is one of Tuscany’s oldest and most respected wine dynasties, with documented roots in viticulture dating back to the 15th century. Castello di Fonterutoli, their historic estate near Castellina in Chianti, has been in the family since 1435 and stands as a benchmark for quality in Chianti Classico and beyond. Over the centuries, the Mazzeis have played a key role in shaping Tuscan wine, combining tradition with an innovative spirit—Siepi itself was visionary in the 1980s for planting Merlot alongside Sangiovese in a top hillside site. Today, Castello di Fonterutoli is recognized internationally for its estate-driven, terroir-focused wines and for helping to elevate the global reputation of Tuscany as a producer of world-class, ageworthy reds.
