Description
Castello di Collemassari’s Irisse is a richly styled, barrel-aged Vermentino from Montecucco DOC that combines ripe Mediterranean fruit with impressive texture and precision. The addition of Grechetto brings extra breadth and depth, while the wine’s balance of creaminess, freshness, and subtle oak makes it a standout expression of Tuscan white wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Irisse shows a luminous straw-yellow colour with a polished, inviting sheen. The bouquet opens with ripe peach, apricot, juicy pear, white flowers, and a touch of almond, followed by more nuanced layers of wild herbs, white pepper, wet stone, anise, and a gentle hint of vanilla.
The palate is full-bodied and floral, with generous notes of apricot, grapefruit, and passion fruit supported by a lively, well-integrated acidity. A creamy mid-palate and the oak influence add shape and complexity without overpowering the fruit, leading to a long, juicy, mouthwatering finish. This is a wine with excellent balance and enough structure to develop further over the next few years.
Production
The grapes for Irisse come from vineyards situated around 300 metres above sea level in the Montecucco area of Tuscany, where sandy, marl-like stone, marble, and clay help shape the wine’s distinctive mineral and textural profile. Harvest is carried out with care to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity, and the blend is made up of 85% Vermentino and 15% Grechetto.
Fermentation takes place in large oak casks, after which the wine matures for 12 months in small oak barrels. It then rests for a further 6 months in bottle before release, resulting in a white wine with depth, creaminess, and a refined interplay between fruit, wood, and freshness.
Food & Serving
Irisse is an excellent match for intense seafood dishes such as roasted scallops or langoustines, especially when served with celery purée and thinly sliced fennel. It also works beautifully with roast poultry, creamy shellfish preparations, and dishes with aromatic herbs. Serve well chilled at around 10-12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help open the wine further if served young.
