Description
Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Montebuoni Riserva 2021 is a refined, site-driven expression of Sangiovese from one of Chianti Classico’s most respected estates. Sourced primarily from the 14.5-hectare Montebuoni vineyard, this Riserva marries precision, elegance and depth in a style that is both modern and faithful to tradition. Introduced as a dedicated Chianti Classico wine with the 2018 vintage, Montebuoni quickly established itself as a benchmark for sustainable, terroir-focused Tuscan reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Montebuoni Riserva shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections at the rim, signaling both freshness and concentration.
The nose opens with pure red cherry and wild strawberry, followed by notes of blood orange, dried roses, and violet, layered with hints of Tuscan herbs, tobacco leaf, and a subtle graphite minerality. A touch of sweet spice—clove, nutmeg, and a whisper of vanilla or cedar from oak aging—adds complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, this is sleek and energetic, with juicy red and black cherry, plum skin, and a delicate note of sour cherry that is quintessentially Chianti Classico. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and grip, yet remain polished and silky, while bright, mouthwatering acidity keeps everything lifted and food-friendly. Undertones of savory herbs, leather, and a faint earthy note emerge on the long, focused finish. The 2021 vintage offers the balance and structure to age gracefully; enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit or cellar it for 8–12 years to develop more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers, and forest floor.
Production
The Montebuoni vineyard, replanted in 1997, lies adjacent to the famed Bellavista site in the heart of the Chianti Classico hills, benefiting from stony, well-drained galestro and alberese soils and a classic mix of warm days and cool nights. Since replanting, the vineyard has been managed under a sustainability protocol rooted in three pillars—economic, environmental, and social responsibility—ensuring healthy vines and long-term vineyard vitality. The Sangiovese, complemented by a touch of Merlot for texture and depth, is typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with gentle maceration to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then matured—most likely in a combination of barriques and larger oak casks—to refine structure, integrate oak nuances, and preserve the purity of fruit and terroir expression before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Riserva is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, or roasted pork with fennel and sage. It also works beautifully with mushroom risotto, aged Pecorino Toscano, and charcuterie featuring finocchiona and prosciutto. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the tannins soften and allow the more complex floral and spicy notes to emerge; older bottles can be decanted gently just before serving to remove any sediment.
