Description
Castello dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo 2018 is a captivating Tuscan red that marries power with remarkable finesse. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot, it delivers a deeply concentrated yet almost weightless experience on the palate. Produced in tiny quantities from a single, six-hectare vineyard, this is one of Tuscany’s modern icons, a wine that helped redefine what “Supertuscan” can mean in terms of elegance and depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Vigna d'Alceo shows an almost ink-black core with a deep purple rim, hinting at its richness and concentration. The nose is complex and expressive, unfolding layers of dried and fresh blackberries, rum-soaked fruitcake, syrupy kirsch, and dark cherry compote, supported by subtle notes of spice and a refined, earthy undertone.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, yet remains astonishingly graceful. Dense black fruit flavors—blackberry, cassis, and dark plum—are wrapped in a silken texture, with fine-grained tannins that feel luxurious rather than aggressive. Despite its robust aromatic profile and impressive fruit weight, the wine glides across the palate with an almost weightless quality, leading to a long, finely textured, and impeccably balanced finish. This is a wine built for the long term; while already mesmerizing, it will reward cellaring for 10–20 years or more, gaining further complexity and nuance over time.
Production
The fruit for Vigna d'Alceo 2018 comes from a dedicated six-hectare vineyard within the Castello dei Rampolla estate in Tuscany, oriented south and south-east to maximize sun exposure and achieve optimal ripeness. The warm, well-exposed slopes and the local soils provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot—varieties that thrive in this microclimate and yield intensely flavored, structured grapes. Harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure precise selection of perfectly mature clusters. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully vinified to preserve purity and extract fine tannins, with fermentation and maceration designed to build depth without sacrificing elegance. The wine is then aged (traditionally in high-quality oak) to refine its texture, integrate the varieties, and develop the complex bouquet that characterizes Vigna d'Alceo.
Food & Serving
Vigna d'Alceo 2018 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef short ribs, slow-cooked lamb shank, or game meats like venison. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, truffle dishes, and deeply flavored mushroom or porcini preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its structure and youth, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is strongly recommended to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften, revealing the wine’s full spectrum of complexity.
Producer
Castello dei Rampolla is a historic family estate in Tuscany, long recognized as one of the region’s most visionary and quality-driven producers. Over the years, Castello dei Rampolla has become renowned for its biodynamic approach, low-intervention philosophy, and consistently outstanding bottlings such as Vigna d'Alceo and Sammarco.
