Description
Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2016 is a powerful, age-worthy Tuscan red that marries Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese into a deeply structured, classical blend. Released after an extra year of bottle aging, this vintage is still defined by its tightly knit tannins and remarkable energy, rewarding collectors with patience and foresight. As one of Tuscany’s benchmark “Super Tuscan” wines, Sammarco has long showcased how Bordeaux varieties and Sangiovese can express the unique character of the Chianti Classico hills.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Sammarco is a deep, vibrant ruby with garnet hues at the rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, opening slowly with blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry, followed by notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and dried Mediterranean herbs. Hints of violets, dark chocolate and warm spices emerge with air, underlining the wine’s complexity and promise.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and firmly structured, with a core of dark, savory fruit wrapped in persistent, gripping tannins. Cassis, blackberry and wild cherry are laced with earthy tones, licorice, leather and a subtle balsamic edge, all carried by fresh yet serious acidity. The finish is long, taut and mineral-driven, suggesting a wine still in its adolescence. While the extra year of bottle aging has begun to integrate the tannins, this 2016 Sammarco is built for the long haul and will continue to evolve beautifully for 15–20+ years in a proper cellar.
Production
Sammarco is sourced from estate vineyards in the hills of Panzano in Chianti, one of Tuscany’s most prized subzones, where a mix of galestro (friable marl) and limestone soils, high elevation and wide diurnal temperature swings give naturally low yields and exceptional aromatic intensity. Castello dei Rampolla farms its vines organically and biodynamically, harvesting by hand to ensure meticulous selection of perfectly ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. After careful sorting in the cellar, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, followed by a long maceration to extract color, flavor and structure. The wine is then aged in oak (predominantly French) for an extended period and rested further in bottle before release, allowing its formidable structure to begin harmonizing before it reaches the market.
Food & Serving
This structured, concentrated Tuscan red shines alongside richly flavored, protein-driven dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shank, venison, slow-cooked short ribs, or aged pecorino and other hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, porcini risotto and robust, herb-scented stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to let the aromatics unfold. Decanting is strongly recommended: 2–3 hours for current drinking to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open, or even longer if opened in its youth.
Producer
Castello dei Rampolla is a historic family estate located in Panzano in Chianti, with roots dating back centuries in the heart of Tuscany. Under the stewardship of the Di Napoli family, the winery became one of the pioneering forces behind the Super Tuscan movement, integrating international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Sangiovese long before it was fashionable. Today, Castello dei Rampolla is celebrated for its biodynamic farming, low-intervention philosophy and consistently high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Sammarco, in particular, has earned a reputation as one of Tuscany’s most collectible and long-lived reds, frequently praised by international critics and enthusiasts alike for its depth, character and aging potential.
