Description

Castello Dei Rampolla Sammarco 1985 is a landmark Tuscan red that captures the early golden age of Super Tuscans, when Cabernet and Sangiovese blends were rewriting Italy’s wine identity. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and a touch of Merlot, this bottle comes from one of the estates that helped define modern Tuscan greatness. Today, mature examples like the 1985 are prized by collectors for their complexity, elegance and fully developed tertiary character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1985 Sammarco typically shows a deep garnet core shading to brick at the rim, a classic sign of its age and long evolution in bottle. The nose is highly nuanced and layered: expect aromas of dried cherries and blackcurrants alongside leather, cedar, tobacco leaf, underbrush, truffle, and a gentle balsamic note, with hints of dried herbs and spice emerging as it opens. On the palate, this is a mature, refined wine rather than a powerhouse, with silken, integrated tannins and a medium to full body that carries remarkable persistence. Flavors of dried red and black fruits, forest floor, cigar box, savory spice, and a touch of graphite are framed by refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. The 1985 vintage is now at or beyond its peak drinking window for most well-cellared bottles, offering maximum complexity rather than primary fruit. Well-stored examples can still deliver profound pleasure, but this is a wine to drink and savor rather than hold for further aging.

Production
Castello Dei Rampolla’s vineyards lie in the heart of Tuscany, within Chianti Classico, on limestone- and marl-rich soils with good drainage and optimal exposure—ideal conditions for both Sangiovese and Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the 1980s, meticulous vineyard work and manual harvesting were already hallmarks of the estate, with low yields and careful bunch selection at harvest to ensure concentration and purity of fruit. Sammarco 1985 was vinified in a decidedly traditional-yet-innovative Tuscan style for its time, guided by the legendary enologist Giacomo Tachis: extended macerations to extract color and structure, followed by élevage in oak to refine the tannins and add layers of spice and complexity, before bottling and long rest in the cellar prior to release.

Food & Serving
With its mature structure and evolved bouquet, the 1985 Sammarco pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan and refined meat dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shanks, game birds, roast veal, or aged pecorino and other firm cheeses. Earthy dishes featuring porcini mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables also play well with its tertiary notes of forest floor and leather. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) to fully express the aromatic complexity. Older bottles benefit from very gentle handling: stand the bottle upright several hours in advance, then decant carefully just before serving to remove sediment, allowing brief aeration without exposing the wine to prolonged oxygen contact.

Producer
Castello Dei Rampolla was founded in 1972 by Alceo di Napoli, who had the vision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon alongside traditional Sangiovese in the hills of Chianti at a time when this was still a bold, forward-thinking move. Working closely with the famed enologist Giacomo Tachis—the mind behind some of Italy’s most iconic wines—Alceo helped position Rampolla at the forefront of the Super Tuscan movement. His children, Luca and Maurizia di Napoli, took over nearly two decades later and have since transformed the estate into a benchmark biodynamic property, known for uncompromising quality and a deeply terroir-driven style. Sammarco, together with Vigna d’Alceo and the estate’s top Chianti, has secured Castello Dei Rampolla’s reputation as one of Tuscany’s most respected and influential producers.
