Description

Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most historic and privileged estates. Sourced from vineyards with varied exposures and a mosaic of soils, this Brunello delivers depth, precision and remarkable elegance in the glass. It’s a wine built both for immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring, inviting you back time and again as it unfolds new layers with age.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino shows a vibrant, deep ruby red with garnet reflections beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose opens with pure, refined Sangiovese character: ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange peel, followed by nuances of dried rose petals, sweet tobacco, cedar, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs and warm earth. On the palate, it is structured yet silky, with a lively acidity that carries the fruit and keeps the wine elegant and focused. Flavors of juicy red cherry and plum intertwine with notes of licorice, cocoa, savory spice and a subtle balsamic hint. The tannins are fine-grained but firm, promising excellent evolution, while the finish is long and persistent, marked by mineral undertones from the estate’s varied soils. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, this 2020 Brunello has the balance and structure to age gracefully for 12–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
Castelgiocondo lies on the southwest slope of Montalcino, at higher elevations where breezes and wide day–night temperature swings help Sangiovese ripen slowly and evenly. The vineyards are planted on a patchwork of galestro (crumbly schist), clay and ancient Pliocene sands, which together give the wine its combination of power, aromatic lift and mineral tension. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness from each exposure and soil type. After a careful selection, the Sangiovese is vinified in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatics, followed by an extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and flavor. The wine is then aged in oak—typically a mix of large casks and smaller barrels—for several years, followed by additional bottle aging, in line with Brunello di Montalcino’s strict production rules, to ensure complexity and readiness at release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, braised beef, game birds, and slow-cooked ragù over pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano and mature hard cheeses with nutty, savory profiles. Serve at 18°C (around 64–65°F) in large Burgundy-style or Brunello glasses to allow full aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and open up the wine’s more subtle floral, spice and earthy nuances.

Producer
Castelgiocondo is one of the historic Brunello estates of Montalcino, owned by the renowned Frescobaldi family—whose winemaking roots in Tuscany stretch back over 700 years. Perched on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino, Castelgiocondo was among the first properties to recognize the potential of Sangiovese in this area and has played a key role in establishing Brunello as one of Italy’s great wines. Today, Frescobaldi combines deep regional knowledge with modern precision in the vineyard and cellar, consistently producing Brunello di Montalcino that earns international acclaim for its balance of tradition, terroir expression and contemporary finesse.
