Description

Case Basse Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Soldera 2000 is one of those rare wines that has become a benchmark for what Sangiovese Grosso can achieve in Montalcino. Crafted by the late Gianfranco Soldera in tiny quantities, it captures the essence of a warm, generous vintage shaped by meticulous, nature‑respectful viticulture and long, patient aging. This Riserva stands out for its purity, depth and energy, and is widely regarded as one of the most collectible and ageworthy Brunellos of its era.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2000 Riserva shows a deep garnet core with a subtle brick‑tinged rim, reflecting over two decades of graceful evolution. The bouquet is intensely complex and ever‑changing: ripe dark cherries and blackcurrants mingle with dried rose petals, violets, balsamic tones, cedar, sandalwood, and a touch of tobacco and leather. With air, notes of underbrush, truffle, tea leaf and subtle spices slowly unfold, giving a truly multi‑layered aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet remarkably refined. The warm vintage gives a generous, ripe fruit core—dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant—framed by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity and beautifully resolved but still present tannins. The texture is silky and caressing, with great precision and length. A mineral, almost saline streak runs through the long, persistent finish, adding lift and definition to the wine’s richness. The 2000 vintage offers both immediate pleasure and further development; properly stored bottles are still on an upward curve and can easily continue to evolve over the next decade or more.

Production
Case Basse lies in the south‑western part of Montalcino, an area known for its cool breezes, rich biodiversity and well‑drained, limestone‑clay soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The estate is farmed with a philosophy of minimal intervention and deep respect for nature, encouraging a balanced ecosystem around the vines. Grapes are hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in large open wooden vats. After fermentation, the Brunello Riserva Soldera 2000 spent around five years maturing in large Slavonian oak casks, without fining or filtration, allowing the wine to clarify and harmonize slowly while preserving the pure, unmasked expression of Sangiovese Grosso and terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a meditative wine that shines alongside refined, flavorful dishes. Think classic Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or aged Pecorino Toscano and other hard, mature cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, roast game birds, and simple preparations of porcini mushrooms. Serve at 16–18 °C and allow ample time for the wine to open; decanting 3–4 hours before serving is strongly recommended to let the bouquet fully blossom and the palate find its remarkable balance and finesse.

Producer
Case Basse was founded by Gianfranco Soldera in the early 1970s and quickly rose to cult status among collectors and critics for its uncompromising pursuit of quality and authenticity. Located in the south‑western part of Montalcino, the estate is renowned for its meticulously tended vineyards, extraordinary biodiversity and strictly traditional, low‑intervention cellar work. Soldera’s Brunellos have long been considered among the purest and most profound expressions of Sangiovese in Tuscany, often commanding international acclaim and setting benchmarks for longevity and complexity. Today, Case Basse remains a reference point in the region, symbolizing a singular, artisanal vision of Brunello di Montalcino at its most elegant and ageworthy.
