Description

Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 2020 in magnum format is a powerful yet refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected estates. Drawn from the estate’s historic vineyards, including the famed Vigna Nuova di Fiesole first planted to Sangiovese in 1873, this wine captures the classic balance of intensity, elegance, and length that has made Brunello a Tuscan icon. The magnum bottling not only offers a spectacular centerpiece at the table, but also ensures a slower, more graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections forming at the rim, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose opens with pristine red cherry and wild strawberry, followed by notes of dried rose petals, sweet tobacco, and hints of balsamic herbs. Subtle layers of cedar, spice box, and a touch of underbrush add complexity as it breathes. On the palate, the wine is poised and energetic, with a refined structure that reflects both the vintage and the estate’s elegant style. Lively red berry and cherry fruit are wrapped in finely etched tannins, supported by vibrant acidity that gives the wine lift and persistence. Flavors of blood orange, black tea, and a gentle savory undertone emerge across the mid-palate, leading to a long, focused finish with lingering notes of spice and dried flowers. In magnum, the 2020 has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with a decant, it will continue to develop greater complexity and harmony over 12–20 years, and potentially longer under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
This Brunello di Montalcino is sourced from Casanova di Neri’s historic hillside vineyards around Montalcino, including the renowned Vigna Nuova di Fiesole, where Sangiovese has been cultivated since 1873. The terroir combines well-drained soils rich in galestro and marl with significant diurnal temperature swings, giving grapes both ripeness and aromatic precision. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, followed by a further sorting in the cellar. Vinification is carried out with a focus on purity of fruit and finesse, using temperature-controlled fermentations to preserve aromatics and structure. The wine is then aged for around 30 months in traditional Slavonian oak casks, which lend subtle spice and help shape the tannins without overshadowing the Sangiovese character, before an additional year of bottle aging to integrate and refine the final blend prior to release.

Food & Serving
This magnum of Brunello di Montalcino is a natural match for rich, savory dishes and classic Tuscan fare. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or roast game birds with herbs and porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle-accented dishes. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both the fruit and the more delicate floral and spicy notes. For current drinking, decant the magnum for 1.5–2 hours to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften; for bottles with more age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is usually sufficient.

Producer
Casanova di Neri, founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, has become one of the benchmark producers in Montalcino, renowned for its meticulous vineyard work and its ability to craft Brunellos that combine depth, polish, and a strong sense of place. The estate’s holdings include some of the area’s most prized sites, among them the historic Vigna Nuova di Fiesole where Sangiovese has been cultivated since the late 19th century. Over the decades, Casanova di Neri has played a key role in elevating Brunello di Montalcino’s global reputation, earning consistently high praise from international critics and collectors alike. Known for both their single-vineyard bottlings and their classically styled Brunello, the winery is widely regarded as a modern icon in Tuscany, marrying tradition with a precise, quality-driven approach from vineyard to bottle.
