Description
La Spinetta Sezzana 2011 is a characterful Tuscan red that marries the elegance of Sangiovese with the depth and color of Colorino. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Tuscany and crafted by one of Italy’s most respected modern estates, it delivers both authenticity and a distinctly contemporary polish. This 2011 vintage comes from a ripe, structured year, giving the wine an extra layer of complexity and aging potential that serious collectors and Tuscan enthusiasts will appreciate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Spinetta Sezzana 2011 shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, a visual cue to its more than a decade of graceful evolution. The nose opens with vivid aromas of ripe red cherries, black plum, and wild berries, followed by notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, leather, and a hint of violets and forest floor, typical of well-developed Tuscan reds.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm yet refined tannic structure. Sangiovese contributes bright acidity and red fruit purity, while Colorino adds darker fruit tones, color, and a touch of spice. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry compote, and blackcurrant are layered with savory notes of cedar, licorice, and subtle balsamic undertones. The finish is long and persistent, carried by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. At this stage, the 2011 is in a beautiful drinking window, showing mature complexity while retaining energy; with proper cellaring, it can continue to evolve gracefully for several more years.
Production
Sezzana is sourced from Tuscan vineyards rooted in predominantly calcareous and clay-rich soils, which naturally limit yields and enhance concentration, structure, and aromatic finesse in Sangiovese. The Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cooler nights, allows for slow, even ripening and the development of both ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters of Sangiovese and Colorino make it to the cellar. After careful sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve varietal character and aromatic precision. The wine is then matured in oak (often French barriques or medium-sized barrels), where it gains texture, integration, and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit, before being bottled and given additional time to rest prior to release.
Food & Serving
La Spinetta Sezzana 2011 pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan fare and rich, savory dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, braised beef, wild boar ragù, or hearty pasta with tomato, herbs, and aged Pecorino. It also works well with mushroom dishes, truffle-based plates, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the fruit and the more evolved tertiary notes. Given its age and structure, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften on the palate.
Producer
La Spinetta, founded by the Rivetti family, is widely recognized as one of Italy’s leading modern wineries, initially famed for its expressive Piedmontese wines before expanding into Tuscany. Their Tuscan project is focused on showcasing the finesse and complexity of Sangiovese through meticulously farmed vineyards and a quality-first philosophy. In the region, La Spinetta stands out for uniting traditional Italian grape varieties with a contemporary approach to viticulture and cellar work, emphasizing low yields, attentive vineyard management, and precise, polished winemaking. Over the years, the estate has garnered strong critical recognition and an international following, helping to elevate the profile of premium Tuscan reds on the global stage.
