Description

La Spinetta Sezzana 2008 is a characterful Tuscan red that marries the structure of Sangiovese with the depth and color of Colorino, resulting in a wine that is both soulful and refined. Crafted by the acclaimed Piedmontese producer La Spinetta from a single vineyard in Tuscany, this bottling showcases the estate’s meticulous approach and signature intensity. From an excellent, ageworthy vintage, Sezzana 2008 offers a mature expression of central Tuscany with the polish and precision that have made La Spinetta a collector favorite.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Sezzana shows a deep garnet hue with brick-tinged edges, signaling its evolution in bottle. The nose is layered and complex, offering dark cherry, black plum and dried raspberry, intertwined with notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, sweet spices, and a touch of wild herbs and dried rose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet finely structured wine, with ripe, resolved tannins and vibrant acidity that keeps everything in balance. Flavors of sour cherry, blackcurrant and macerated berries unfold alongside hints of licorice, cocoa, underbrush and earthy mineral tones from the Tuscan soils. The finish is long, savory and slightly balsamic, with lingering spice and dried fruit. At this stage, the 2008 is drinking beautifully, showing tertiary complexity, but well-cellared bottles still have a few years of graceful evolution ahead.

Production
Sezzana comes from a carefully selected vineyard site in Tuscany, where Sangiovese thrives in well-drained, calcareous and clay-rich soils with good exposure, giving natural concentration and aromatic depth. Yields are kept low, and grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, the wine is aged in oak (predominantly French barriques) to develop structure and complexity, followed by further bottle aging before release, allowing Sezzana to gain its signature integration and finesse.

Food & Serving
La Spinetta Sezzana 2008 is a natural partner for classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, and rich ragù with pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, Parmigiano-Reggiano, game birds, and truffle-inflected dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and allow the acidity to stay fresh. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to open up the mature bouquet and soften any remaining tannic edges, especially if the bottle has been cellared for many years.

Producer
La Spinetta was founded in the 1970s by the Rivetti family in Piedmont and quickly gained an international reputation for powerful, concentrated and expressive wines, particularly from Barbaresco and Barolo. Their move into Tuscany, with estates such as Sezzana and other carefully chosen vineyards, reflects a desire to interpret Italy’s great terroirs with the same precision and ambition. Today, La Spinetta is regarded as one of Italy’s most dynamic, quality-focused producers, consistently earning high scores and critical acclaim, and playing a key role in elevating the profile of both Piedmontese and Tuscan wines on the world stage.
