Description

Casanova della Spinetta Toscana Sangiovese Rosso Sassontino 2011 is a выразive Tuscan red that brings together the energy of Sangiovese with the depth and color of Colorino. Produced by La Spinetta, it reflects a modern, precise interpretation of Tuscany’s most iconic grape, while still staying true to the region’s long winemaking heritage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright ruby to garnet hue, with the graceful transparency often associated with quality Sangiovese. The nose is layered and refined, with red cherry, sour cherry, dried herbs, violet, and subtle earthy and spice notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and lively, with fresh acidity, fine tannins, and a savory, mineral edge that gives it lift and definition. With age, the wine develops greater complexity, moving from fresh red fruit toward dried fruit, leather, tobacco, and forest floor nuances. The 2011 vintage should now be entering a stage where its structure is more integrated, making it especially appealing for those who enjoy mature Tuscan reds with balance and character.

Production
Sassontino is crafted from Sangiovese with a touch of Colorino, grapes that thrive in Tuscany’s warm days and cooler evenings, conditions that help preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The vineyards benefit from soils and exposures that support ripening while maintaining the acidity and tension essential to Sangiovese. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, with careful fruit selection to ensure quality. Vinification focuses on preserving purity of fruit and varietal expression, with fermentation and maturation designed to enhance structure without overpowering the wine’s natural elegance. Colorino adds depth, color, and a touch of firmness, rounding out the classic Sangiovese profile.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as pappardelle with ragù, roast chicken, grilled lamb, and aged pecorino. Its acidity also makes it a strong match for tomato-based sauces and mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 30-60 minutes if the bottle is showing youthful restraint or sediment from age.

Producer
La Spinetta is one of Italy’s most acclaimed modern wine producers, known for combining meticulous vineyard work with a distinctive, high-quality style. Founded by the Rivetti family in Piedmont and later expanded into Tuscany, the estate has become especially respected for wines that express both regional identity and polished craftsmanship. Its Tuscan range has helped reinforce the international reputation of the region’s fine red wines.
