Description
Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2019 is a rare, limited-release red from one of Spain’s most exciting Mediterranean estates. Produced only in select “Mediterranean” vintages, this cuvée showcases old-vine, north-facing plots that bring remarkable freshness and definition to Jumilla’s naturally generous fruit. The 2019 skips straight from the acclaimed 2017 release, underlining just how strict the estate is about the quality and style needed to bottle Cuvée N. Old vines planted in the late 1970s on sandy limestone covered with pebbles give this wine its unique character: powerful yet poised, richly fruited yet never heavy. With just 3,400 bottles produced and long, careful aging in large used oak barrels, this is a collector-worthy expression of Mediterranean Spain with a clear sense of place and vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cuvée N Viñas Viejas shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a slight garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and refinement. The nose is expressive and layered, offering ripe but not jammy dark fruit—think black cherry, plum and wild blackberry—interwoven with notes of aromatic Mediterranean herbs, dried flowers, and a gentle lift of licorice and spice from its time in barrel.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and lively acidity. Flavors of dark berries and red plum are framed by savory undertones—rosemary, thyme, and a touch of earth—along with a subtle smokiness and sweet spice from élevage in 500-liter used oak. The tannins are fine but slightly grainy, giving structure without harshness, and the finish is long, dry and precise, with a lingering echo of herbs and mineral. While already very enjoyable now with a brief decant, this vintage has the depth and structure to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, developing more complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2019 come from old, north-facing vineyards planted in the late 1970s, situated on sandy limestone soils strewn with gravel in Jumilla, southeastern Spain. This combination of altitude, exposure and poor, stony soils naturally limits yields and preserves freshness, even in a warm Mediterranean climate. The fruit—principally old-vine Monastrell—is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection. Fermentation takes place fully destemmed in traditional underground stone lagares, using only indigenous yeasts, which allows the character of the vineyard and the vintage to shine through. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 16 months in used 500-liter oak barrels, a choice that adds texture and gentle spice without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. Only 3,400 bottles were filled in March 2021, and no 2018 or 2020 vintage was produced for this cuvée, highlighting the rigorous selection behind it.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile Mediterranean red that shines alongside flavorful, savory dishes. Pair it with grilled or roasted lamb, Iberian pork chops, slow-cooked beef cheeks, or herb-crusted roast chicken. It also works beautifully with hearty stews, game birds, and dishes seasoned with rosemary, thyme, or smoked paprika, as well as aged Manchego or other firm sheep’s milk cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, slightly cooler than room temperature, to emphasize freshness and aromatic complexity. Decant for 45–60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to open fully and soften its grainy tannins, especially in its first years after release.
Producer
Casa Castillo is one of the benchmark estates of Jumilla and a leading name in the renaissance of Mediterranean Spanish reds. Founded on a historic property that once focused on mixed agriculture, the modern winery has spent decades redefining the potential of Monastrell and other Mediterranean varieties, emphasizing old vines, thoughtful farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. Their vineyards, set on limestone-rich soils and often at higher elevations, give wines of surprising elegance and freshness for such a warm region. Casa Castillo’s strict selection—only bottling Cuvée N in vintages that meet their stylistic vision—has earned them a strong reputation among critics and collectors alike, with numerous high scores and growing recognition as a reference point for terroir-driven wines from southeastern Spain.
