Description
Cardinale Red 2014 is a benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet-based wine, crafted to showcase the intensity and elegance of fruit from some of the region’s highest-quality mountain vineyards. Since its founding in 1982, Cardinale has focused on producing a singular, site-driven wine that captures the character of each vintage, with winemaker Chris Carpenter guiding the estate since 2001.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep, concentrated ruby to garnet color. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark blackberry, cassis, plum, and black cherry joined by notes of cedar, graphite, baking spice, and subtle mocha from its time in oak.
The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet refined, with firm tannins and fresh mountain structure supporting a rich core of ripe dark fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, while Merlot adds softness and complexity. The 2014 vintage is built for aging and should continue to develop beautifully over many years, gaining further nuance and silkiness with cellar time.
Production
Cardinale sources fruit from around a dozen vineyards across Napa Valley, with especially important contributions from mountain sites such as Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain, plus additional terraced vineyard fruit for balance and complexity. The blend is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot, and the grapes are vinified to emphasize concentration, structure, and vineyard expression before spending 19 months in French oak barrels.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for beef, lamb, venison, and poultry, especially when served with roasted, grilled, or herb-crusted preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully.
Producer
Cardinale was created in 1982 with the goal of making a distinctive Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional vineyards. Under the direction of Chris Carpenter since 2001, the winery has earned a strong reputation for producing one carefully crafted wine each vintage, and it has received major critical acclaim, including a 98-point score from Robert Parker for the 2016 release.
