Description
Cantine Paradiso’s 1954 Primitivo Puglia is a generous, characterful red from southern Italy, shaped by the sun-drenched vineyards of Puglia and the house’s long-standing focus on expressive local grapes. Named in tribute to the estate’s founding year, it reflects both the resilience of post-war Puglia and the region’s proud tradition of making warm, fruit-forward wines with real depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections. The nose is typically rich and inviting, offering ripe dark berries, plum, and black cherry, with hints of Mediterranean herbs, spice, and a touch of vanilla and toasted wood from barrel aging.
On the palate, this Primitivo is lush and smooth, with plenty of ripe fruit, a rounded texture, and soft tannins that make it immediately approachable. The oak maturation adds structure, spice, and subtle complexity, while the finish is generous and persistent. It can drink beautifully now, but should also hold well over the next few years thanks to its balanced fruit concentration and aging in both barrel and bottle.
Production
The grapes come from Puglia, a warm southern Italian region known for producing ripe, full-bodied reds. After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures of 15–20°C for 15 to 20 days, with skin contact to extract color, aroma, and structure. The wine then rests for two months in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in barriques, then three more months back in stainless steel before a final four months of bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine, especially good with grilled meats, roasted lamb, rich pasta dishes, aged cheeses, and tomato-based Mediterranean cuisine. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if you want the fruit and oak layers to open up fully.
Producer
Cantine Paradiso was founded in 1954 by Angelo Paradiso during a difficult period for many farmers in southern Italy, when wine growing offered a path toward stability and success. Today, the winery is well regarded for its generous red wines made from traditional Puglian grapes such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Nero di Troia, and it has built a strong reputation for combining regional authenticity with approachable, crowd-pleasing style.
