Description

Cantina di Nessuno Nerosa 2017 is a characterful Etna red born on the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, crafted from organically grown grapes at 700–900 meters above sea level. This blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio channels the volcano’s energy into a poised, mineral-driven wine that marries ripe fruit with striking freshness. A warm, dry 2017 vintage delivered concentrated, aromatic fruit, while careful élevage in used French oak has polished the tannins and added subtle layers of spice.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Nerosa 2017 shows a luminous medium ruby hue, typical of Etna’s Nerello-based wines, with a delicate transparency that hints at finesse over sheer power. The nose is expressive and layered, offering red cherries, ripe strawberries and raspberries, supported by violet, Mediterranean herbs and a clear smoky, ashy note that speaks directly of its volcanic origins. On the palate, the wine is elegant and medium-bodied, with a precise, vibrant acidity that keeps the warm-vintage fruit lifted and fresh. Fine, well-shaped tannins frame flavors of red berry compote, cherry skin, dried herbs and a gentle undertone of spice from its time in used French oak. A stony, saline minerality runs through the mid-palate into a long, fresh finish, where delicate spice and a hint of volcanic smoke linger. At this stage, Nerosa 2017 is drinking beautifully, but it has the structure and acidity to continue developing complexity in bottle for another 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Nerosa 2017 is sourced from high-altitude vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna, between roughly 700 and 900 meters above sea level. Here, the vines grow in mineral-rich, volcanic soils loaded with ash and lava fragments, and benefit from marked day–night temperature shifts that help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. Farmed organically, the grapes (90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio) are hand-harvested to ensure careful selection in the vineyard. After a long period of skin contact to draw out color, aroma and fine tannins, the wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation, then ages for around 12 months in used French oak barrels. This sensitive use of oak softens the tannins and adds subtle spice without masking the wine’s distinctive volcanic character, followed by further bottle aging to harmonize its components.

Food & Serving
Nerosa 2017 is a highly versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, herb-crusted pork, and Mediterranean-inspired pasta dishes such as ragù, pasta alla Norma or tomato-based sauces with olives and capers. It also works wonderfully alongside mature hard cheeses, charcuterie and earthy vegetable dishes like roasted mushrooms or aubergine. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight both its freshness and aromatic depth; a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to help the wine open up, soften the tannins and fully reveal its floral, herbal and smoky nuances.

Producer
Cantina di Nessuno is a small, quality-focused producer working on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, a region that has rapidly become one of Italy’s most exciting terroirs. With organically tended vineyards at altitude, the estate centers its work on native Etna varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, seeking to express the mountain’s distinctive mix of lava-rich soils, cool nights and intense sun. By favoring hand-harvesting, careful selection and restrained use of oak, Cantina di Nessuno contributes to Etna’s growing reputation for elegant, mineral-driven reds that combine Mediterranean warmth with remarkable finesse.
