Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2021 is a vibrant, youthful expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected estates. Crafted from the estate’s youngest vineyards, it combines freshness, structure, and the depth that makes wines from this area so distinctive. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, Canalicchio di Sopra has long balanced modern precision with traditional Tuscan winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Rosso di Montalcino shows the classic appeal of Sangiovese: bright ruby color, clarity, and an inviting sense of energy. The nose is typically lifted and expressive, with red cherry, ripe berry fruit, floral hints, and subtle spice from its time in oak. On the palate, it is juicy and supple, but with real Montalcino character—firm structure, concentration, and finely textured tannins that give the wine both charm and seriousness. The finish is persistent and savory, with freshness balancing the wine’s ripeness. Thanks to its balance and core of fruit, it can be enjoyed now, but it will also develop nicely over the next few years, gaining complexity and softness with short-term cellaring.

Production
The grapes come from the estate’s younger vineyards in the northern part of Montalcino, split between Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli, where vineyard differences in exposure and soil help shape distinct Sangiovese expressions. The vines sit at around 300 meters above sea level, and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures with daily pump-overs, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration and 12 months of ageing in Slavonian oak casks and French oak.

Food & Serving
This Rosso di Montalcino is a natural match for pasta with meat sauces, hearty soups, grilled or roasted meats, and mature cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant can help open up the wine’s aromas and soften its youthful structure.
