Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Calon Ségur is a deep, opaque garnet-purple, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds in layers: baked black cherries and warm cassis are intertwined with licorice, smoked meat, hoisin, and Chinese five spice, alongside more subtle tones of dried rose petals, camphor, and a whisper of cardamom. On the palate, this is full-bodied and intensely packed with black fruits—blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum—wrapped in fine-grained, assertive tannins. Spicy, savory and slightly smoky nuances echo the aromatics, while a vibrant spine of acidity keeps everything lifted and energetic. The finish is very long, structured and persistent, suggesting a wine built for the long haul. Production
Calon Ségur lies in the northern Médoc commune of Saint-Estèphe, on deep gravel and clay soils that are particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, giving wines of depth, freshness, and firm structure. The 2018 blend is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. Careful sorting in the cellar ensures only pristine fruit is vinified, with fermentation and maceration tailored to extract refined tannins and layered aromatics rather than overt heaviness. The wine is then aged for around 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels, contributing texture, polish, and subtle spice while allowing the estate’s distinctive terroir to shine through.

This is a classic, powerful Bordeaux that pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with herbs, game birds, beef short ribs, or braised venison. It also works well with earthy sides such as wild mushrooms, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it matures and integrates, a shorter decant of about 1 hour will be sufficient to let the wine fully reveal its complexity.
