Description
Caldaro Gewürztraminer Campaner 2024 is a luminous, aromatic white from the cool alpine slopes of Trentino-Alto Adige, crafted by the renowned cooperative winery Kaltern Caldaro. Many-faceted, solidly structured and permeated by an idea of light ("Mangefacetteret, solidt struktureret og gennemsyret af en idé om lys"), it captures the pure, mountain-fresh character of its terroir in every glass. This is Gewürztraminer in a refined, modern style: intensely perfumed yet poised, with a clarity that makes it as compelling at the table as it is on its own. The Campaner line represents Kaltern’s focus on premium, single-varietal expressions, and this 2024 vintage shows why Alto Adige is considered one of Italy’s great white wine regions. Drawing on a long local history of cultivating Traminer Aromatico in the foothills of the Dolomites, it combines traditional know-how with precise cellar work to highlight complexity, structure and vibrant aromatics.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Caldaro Gewürztraminer Campaner 2024 presents a bright, luminous straw-yellow hue with golden highlights, hinting at both ripeness and concentration. Swirl the glass and you’ll find an exuberant bouquet: rose petals, lychee, ripe peach and tropical fruit, intertwined with notes of orange blossom, fresh ginger, and a delicate hint of exotic spices. A subtle mineral lift and cool alpine freshness add precision to the nose, keeping the wine from ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, this Gewürztraminer is full-flavored yet surprisingly poised. The texture is generous and slightly oily, coating the mouth with ripe stone fruit, candied citrus peel, and lychee, while floral notes and gentle spice (clove, white pepper, ginger) linger in the background. A well-judged, vibrant acidity and a fine mineral spine provide structure, preventing the natural richness of the grape from becoming cloying. The finish is long, aromatic, and clean, echoing roses and citrus zest. Enjoyable now for its youthful intensity, the 2024 vintage has the concentration to evolve gracefully for 3–5 years, gaining more honeyed, spicy complexity with short- to mid-term cellaring.
Production
The Campaner Gewürztraminer is sourced from carefully selected vineyards around Lake Caldaro in Trentino-Alto Adige, where steep, sun-drenched slopes, cool nights, and well-drained calcareous and morainic soils bring aromatic intensity and freshness to Traminer Aromatico. The climate, strongly influenced by the Alps and moderated by the nearby lake, allows a long ripening period, building flavor while preserving vibrant acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe bunches reach the cellar. After a gentle pressing, the must is clarified at low temperature and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve varietal purity and lift the wine’s delicate floral and spicy aromatic profile. The wine usually rests on fine lees for a period to enhance texture, complexity, and length, before being bottled to capture its bright, expressive character.
Food & Serving
Caldaro Gewürztraminer Campaner 2024 is a versatile partner at the table, especially for aromatic and subtly spicy cuisine. It pairs beautifully with Thai or Vietnamese dishes featuring lemongrass, ginger, and mild chili, as well as Indian curries on the lighter, creamier side. Closer to home, try it with foie gras, patés, rich terrines, aromatic soft cheeses (like Munster, Taleggio, or blue cheeses with honey), and shellfish dishes seasoned with fresh herbs and citrus. It also shines alongside roasted poultry, pork with fruit-based sauces, or lightly spiced vegetable and pumpkin dishes. Serve well-chilled but not too cold, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold gradually. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving and using medium-sized white wine glasses will help the wine express its full bouquet and texture.
