Description

Ca’ del Bosco Pinero 2001 is one of Italy’s benchmark expressions of Pinot Nero, marrying Burgundian finesse with the distinctive character of Lombardy’s Sebino IGT. Sourced from carefully selected parcels on mineral-rich moraine soils, it delivers a poised balance between delicate red fruit, supple structure and savory depth. Now beautifully evolved, this vintage showcases just how gracefully Italian Pinot Nero can age when crafted with precision and respect for terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pinero 2001 shows a mature, translucent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, typical of a well-cellared Pinot Nero of this age. The nose is complex and layered, opening with ripe and dried red berries – think morello cherry and cranberry – followed by dried rose petals, violet, wild herbs and a gentle smokiness. With time in the glass, notes of forest floor, tobacco leaf, truffle and a touch of leather emerge, underpinned by a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, this is refined and medium-bodied, with a silky, almost weightless texture and beautifully integrated tannins. The fresh, lively acidity – a hallmark of the cool 2001 growing season – keeps the wine vibrant, lifting flavors of red cherry, wild strawberry, dried cranberry and sweet spices. Nuances of cedar, toasted oak and savory earth develop toward a long, persistent finish, where mineral and herbal notes linger. The wine is in its optimal drinking window, fully mature but still holding structure and freshness; well-stored bottles can continue to offer pleasure over the next few years, though this is a vintage to enjoy now for its tertiary complexity.

Production
The grapes for Ca’ del Bosco Pinero 2001 come from sustainably farmed Pinot Nero vineyards in Lombardy’s Sebino IGT, planted on glacial moraine soils rich in limestone and minerals. This terroir delivers both elegance and tension, giving Pinot Nero the lift and precision it needs in a relatively cool corner of northern Italy. The fruit is harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters are used. After a gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in small stainless-steel tanks to preserve the grape’s delicate aromatics and purity of fruit. The wine is then aged for around 12–14 months in French barriques, with a significant proportion of new oak, adding subtle notes of vanilla, spice and toast without overshadowing the varietal character. Careful élevage and bottling complete a production approach that emphasizes finesse, balance and longevity.

Food & Serving
This mature Pinot Nero is a superb partner for refined, earthy dishes: think mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, roast poultry, guinea fowl or veal scaloppine. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged semi-hard cheeses and dishes featuring wild herbs or game birds, where its savory complexity and bright acidity can shine. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its aromatic detail and silkiness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended for older bottles like this 2001, both to separate any natural sediment and to allow the bouquet to fully unfold in the glass.

Producer
Ca’ del Bosco is one of Italy’s most acclaimed and innovative wineries, widely regarded as a driving force in elevating Lombardy’s reputation on the international fine wine stage. Founded in the late 1960s in the rolling hills of Franciacorta, the estate first became famous for its world-class sparkling wines, before turning its meticulous standards and technical expertise to still wines such as Pinero. A pioneer of careful vineyard selection, low yields and precision winemaking, Ca’ del Bosco has consistently championed sustainable viticulture and cutting-edge cellar practices. Today, the winery is celebrated not only as a benchmark producer in Franciacorta, but also as one of the key names proving that Italian Pinot Nero can rival some of the world’s most elegant and ageworthy examples.
