Description

Ca’ del Bosco Maurizio Zanella Vino da Tavola 1991 is one of the iconic red wines of Lombardy, named in honor of the estate’s visionary founder and conceived as a statement of the house style. This Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc channels international winemaking finesse through the very specific lens of Franciacorta’s cool-climate terroir. From old vines on select parcels and a cooler 1991 vintage, it has developed into a complex, mature wine that still retains impressive freshness and poise.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1991 Maurizio Zanella shows a deep garnet color with brick-red, tile-like reflections along the rim, a classic sign of graceful bottle age. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding aromas of blackcurrant and dark cherry liqueur alongside dried herbs, cedar wood, cigar tobacco, dark chocolate and a subtle balsamic lift. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably silky, with tannins that have melted into a fine, velvety texture while still giving structure and definition. The acidity, shaped by the cool 1991 season, remains vibrant and well integrated, carrying flavors of dark berries, dried plum, sweet spices, leather and a gentle earthy-mineral undertone. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of cedar, cocoa and savory herbs. This bottle demonstrates excellent longevity; while fully mature and drinking beautifully now, well-stored examples can still offer rewarding complexity over the next few years, though it is firmly in its optimal drinking window.

Production
The fruit for Maurizio Zanella 1991 comes from some of Ca’ del Bosco’s oldest vineyards in Franciacorta, in Lombardy, where glacial moraine soils rich in sand, stones and limestone impart both structure and a clear mineral edge. The estate follows sustainable viticultural practices, focusing on low yields, meticulous canopy management and careful selection in the vineyard. Grapes were harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently destemmed and fermented in small, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic detail. After fermentation, the wine was matured for approximately 18–20 months in predominantly new French oak barriques, allowing it to gain depth, polish and spice complexity, before spending additional years in bottle prior to release to harmonize its components and emphasize its distinctive terroir character.

Food & Serving
This mature, structured red is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised beef cheeks, osso buco, roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, or game such as venison with mushroom-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano or mature alpine cheeses, and with truffle-infused dishes or wild mushroom risotto. Serve at around 18°C, ideally after decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to fully open and any sediment to settle. Use large Bordeaux-style glasses to showcase the wine’s aromatic complexity and textural finesse.

Producer
Ca’ del Bosco, founded by Maurizio Zanella in the late 1960s in the rolling hills of Franciacorta, is widely regarded as one of Italy’s most innovative and quality-driven estates. While internationally known for elevating Franciacorta sparkling wines to world-class status, the winery has also been a pioneer in crafting serious, age-worthy still wines that highlight the potential of Lombardy’s terroirs. The Maurizio Zanella cuvée stands as the estate’s flagship red, expressing Zanella’s ambition to marry Bordeaux varieties with the nuance of Franciacorta’s moraine soils and cool climate. Over the decades, Ca’ del Bosco has earned a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, cutting-edge cellar technology and a long track record of highly rated wines that have helped put Franciacorta and Lombardy firmly on the global fine-wine map.
