Description
Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabajà 2022 is a refined expression of one of Barbaresco’s most revered crus, crafted by a benchmark family estate in the heart of Piedmont. Sourced exclusively from the steep Rabajà vineyard, this wine captures the energy, perfume and structure that have made the site legendary among Nebbiolo lovers. The 2022 vintage brings a seductive balance of ripe fruit and classic Barbaresco finesse, offering both immediate charm and serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Rabajà shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red hues at the rim, characteristic of top Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, with notes of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange peel, interwoven with rose petals, violets, sweet spices, licorice and a subtle hint of cedar and dried herbs.
On the palate, this Barbaresco is elegant yet firmly structured, with finely etched tannins that are polished but present, giving the wine its classic architecture. Flavors of red berries, pomegranate and sour cherry are backed by savory undertones of tobacco leaf, anise, balsamic hints and a mineral-driven finish. The acidity is vibrant and well integrated, keeping the wine fresh and precise despite the warmth of the vintage. While it can be enjoyed in its youth after a proper decant, this 2022 Rabajà has the balance and structure to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gradually gaining more complexity and silkiness.
Production
Rabajà is one of Barbaresco’s most prized crus, a south- to southwest-facing hillside with calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its signature combination of perfume, power and minerality. Bruno Rocca farms the vines with great attention to detail, using sustainable, vineyard-focused practices and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve both aromatic lift and natural acidity. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted, then undergo a traditional fermentation on the skins to extract color, aroma and fine tannin. The wine is subsequently aged in oak – typically a mix of barriques and larger casks – to refine structure and add subtle spice while maintaining the purity of fruit and a clear expression of the Rabajà terroir.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes such as braised veal shank, lamb shoulder, duck breast, or classic Piedmontese fare like tajarin with truffle, brasato al Barolo and aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Earthy flavors – wild mushrooms, truffles, roasted root vegetables and game birds – complement the wine’s floral, spicy complexity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy-style stems to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and unlock the full aromatic spectrum.
Producer
The Bruno Rocca estate is a highly regarded, family-run winery based in Barbaresco, with deep roots in the Rabajà cru where the family has been cultivating vines for generations.
