Description

Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili di Barbaresco 1999 is a benchmark Nebbiolo from one of Piemonte’s most revered crus and producers. It marries the classic structure of the outstanding 1999 vintage with Asili’s hallmark finesse, perfume and minerality. From its long, traditional élevage in large Slavonian oak to its decades-long aging potential, this is a reference-point Barbaresco for collectors and serious Nebbiolo lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1999 Asili shows a luminous garnet core with an orange-brick rim, clearly expressing its maturity yet retaining vibrancy. The bouquet is complex and refined: dried roses, violets and ripe sour cherry unfold into layers of truffle, balsamic notes, underbrush, dried herbs, tobacco and a subtle tarry minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a remarkable harmony between structure and elegance. Silky, well-resolved tannins frame flavors of red cherry, raspberry, dried strawberry, leather, licorice and sweet spice, all carried by a lively, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, persistent and finely etched, marked by Asili’s signature combination of refined power and impeccable balance. The 1999 vintage is now fully mature but still vibrant, with the capacity to evolve further over the coming years for those who appreciate nuanced, tertiary development.

Production
The grapes for this Barbaresco come from the famed Asili cru in Barbaresco, a south to southwest-facing hillside with calcareous marl soils that naturally produce Nebbiolo of great aromatic intensity and mineral precision. The vineyard is farmed using classic, conventional methods, with a focus on optimal ripeness and strict fruit selection at harvest. In keeping with Bruno Giacosa’s traditional philosophy, the wine underwent a long maceration on the skins to ensure deep extraction of color, tannin and aroma, followed by approximately 30 months of aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks. This slow, oxidative élevage allows Nebbiolo’s complexity to unfold without masking the terroir, before additional refinement in bottle.

Food & Serving
This mature Barbaresco pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as veal roast, braised lamb, porcini risotto, truffle pasta, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Its aromatic complexity and evolved structure also make it an ideal companion to dishes featuring white truffle, wild mushrooms or slow-cooked ragù. Serve at around 18°C, ideally in large Burgundy-style or Nebbiolo-specific glasses. Decant gently 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open and to separate any natural sediment that may have formed during long cellaring.

Producer
Bruno Giacosa is one of Piemonte’s legendary names, widely regarded as a master of traditional Barolo and Barbaresco. Working primarily with top crus in Barbaresco and Barolo, Giacosa helped define the classic, long-lived style of Nebbiolo that has made the region world-famous. His meticulous selection of vineyards and unwavering commitment to long aging in large Slavonian casks have produced some of the most sought-after wines in the Langhe. The Asili bottling, in particular, is considered a pinnacle expression of Barbaresco, consistently earning critical acclaim and cementing Giacosa’s status as a benchmark producer of the region.
