Description
From one of Vosne-Romanée’s most fabled Premier Cru sites, Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Bio 2021 captures the haunting perfume and finesse that make this tiny village so revered among Pinot Noir lovers. Farmed organically and drawn from old vines, this cuvée offers a remarkably pure expression of Côte de Nuits elegance. Sitting just above the iconic Grand Cru Echézeaux, Les Beaux Monts combines pedigree terroir with Clavelier’s quietly meticulous craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Les Beaux Monts shows a luminous, translucent ruby with garnet highlights, typical of finely structured Vosne Pinot Noir. The nose is immediately seductive: wild raspberry, red cherry, and ripe cranberry mingle with rose petals, violets, and hints of blood orange. Underneath the fruit, classic Vosne notes emerge—subtle sweet spice (clove, star anise, a touch of cinnamon), fine sandalwood, and a chalky, mineral edge, all wrapped in a delicate, slightly earthy undertone.
On the palate, the wine is precise and filigreed rather than opulent, reflecting the cooler, refined style of 2021. Silky, finely woven tannins frame a core of red berries, pomegranate, and sour cherry, with savoury nuances of forest floor, dried herbs, and a touch of black tea. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and length, while the mineral backbone from the stony subsoil provides focus and tension. Already approachable with air, this Premier Cru has the structure to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity, truffle notes, and further aromatic detail with time in bottle.
Production
Les Beaux Monts sits above Echézeaux on the Côte de Nuits, with a South–South-East exposure that bathes the vineyard in long, even sunlight and ensures excellent airflow. The soils are a mix of rötlicher bis ockerfarbener Ton (reddish to ochre clay) over coarse-grained limestone, giving both depth and a marked mineral line to the wine. The vines here were planted after the Second World War from a sélection massale, not clones, and are now over 60 years old—low-yielding plants that deliver small, concentrated berries. Domaine Bruno Clavelier has been certified organic (Bio) for years, relying on manual work in the vineyard, careful canopy management, and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, vinification is deliberately gentle: traditional fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a sensitive use of whole clusters depending on the vintage, and élevage in French oak barrels (with a restrained proportion of new wood) to preserve the purity of fruit and the signature spice and finesse of Vosne-Romanée. The result is an unforced, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that speaks clearly of its Premier Cru origins.
Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru is an exceptional partner for refined dishes where subtlety and texture matter. Think roast pigeon or duck breast with cherries, veal sweetbreads, or a perfectly pink rack of lamb. It also shines alongside game birds, mushroom-based dishes (wild mushroom risotto, truffled poultry), and delicate, matured cheeses such as Comté, Tomme de Savoie, or mild washed-rind styles. Serve at 15–16°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and silkiness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it matures, a brief, careful decanting just to remove any sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is rooted in Vosne-Romanée, one of Burgundy’s most prized villages, with family holdings that trace back several generations. Bruno took over the estate in the late 20th century and quickly established a reputation for serious, terroir-centric wines crafted from old vines across some of the Côte de Nuits’ most sought-after lieux-dits and Premier Crus. Early on, he committed to organic viticulture, making the domaine one of the reference points for environmentally conscious, low-intervention winemaking in the region. Today, Clavelier is celebrated for producing classic, finely etched Burgundies that express the nuance of each parcel—from village Vosne through to distinguished Premier Crus like Les Beaux Monts—earning consistent acclaim from critics and collectors alike.
