Description
Bruno Clavelier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Bio 2020 is a refined, terroir-driven Burgundy from one of the region’s most respected artisan growers. Sourced from the Premier Cru Les Corbeaux, a vineyard just below the Grand Cru slopes of Mazis-Chambertin, this cuvée captures the power of Gevrey with the finesse and purity that define Clavelier’s style. Certified organic (“Bio”) and crafted with minimal intervention, it offers a rare combination of authenticity, elegance and cellar-worthy structure. The unique selling point of this wine lies in its old-vine Pinot Noir, organically farmed and handled with exceptional care, yielding a deeply expressive yet precise Gevrey-Chambertin. Les Corbeaux is known for producing wines with dark, mineral depth and a firm backbone, and 2020’s excellent growing season adds concentration without sacrificing freshness. Domaine Bruno Clavelier, with family roots in Burgundy viticulture dating back to the 18th century, has become a benchmark for naturally farmed, classically styled Côte de Nuits wines, and this Premier Cru bottling reflects that legacy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with garnet highlights, indicating both ripeness and intensity. The nose opens with pure black cherry and wild raspberry, followed by layers of blackberry, violet, rose petal, and hints of black tea. Underneath the fruit, there’s a distinct Gevrey stamp: notes of crushed stone, iron, and earthy undergrowth, with subtle touches of spice and fine-grained oak that sit in the background rather than dominate.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied for Pinot Noir, combining silky texture with a firm, finely etched tannic structure. Juicy dark berries, red currant and cherry fruit are framed by lively acidity, giving the wine both energy and length. As it unfolds, nuances of licorice, cocoa nib, savory herbs and a cool, stony minerality emerge, leading into a long, precise, and slightly saline finish. The 2020 vintage provides ample concentration and ripeness, but the balance suggests very good aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with decanting for its youthful vibrancy, but will reward patience over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Les Corbeaux is a Premier Cru climat located on well-drained, stony soils rich in limestone and clay, just downslope from the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. This privileged position gives the wine its combination of power, depth, and mineral tension, while the cool Burgundy climate preserves aromatic finesse and freshness. Domaine Bruno Clavelier farms the vines organically (Bio), favoring low yields, careful canopy management, and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are brought into the cellar.
In the winery, traditional Burgundian methods are used with a light touch: the fruit is sorted by hand, with a proportion of whole clusters often retained to enhance aromatic complexity and structure, depending on the vintage conditions. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and extraction is gentle to preserve finesse over brute force. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a modest percentage of new oak—to support, rather than overshadow, the character of the terroir. It is bottled with minimal interference, often with low sulfur additions, maintaining both purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Bio 2020 is a superb partner for refined yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with classic Burgundian cuisine such as coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon, as well as roast duck, guinea fowl, game birds, and lamb chops with herbs. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffle dishes, root vegetables, or lentils—highlight the wine’s mineral and savory dimensions, while aged hard cheeses like Comté, Gruyère, or Tomme de Savoie make for excellent pairings.
For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F). In its youth, the wine benefits from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to open the aromatics and soften the structure. As it evolves in bottle, a shorter decant of around 30 minutes or serving directly from the bottle into large Burgundy stems will allow its complexity to unfold gracefully.
Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is based in Vosne-Romanée and has deep family roots in Burgundy, with generations of growers having supplied grapes to some of the region’s most famous négociants before bottling under their own name. Since taking over in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bruno Clavelier has focused on expressing the nuances of individual terroirs through meticulous vineyard work and minimal-intervention winemaking. The domaine is certified organic and is renowned for its old-vine parcels across the Côte de Nuits, including prestigious climats in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, and Gevrey-Chambertin.
Within the region, Clavelier is widely regarded as a purist, championing massale selections, low yields, and non-oxidative, terroir-focused élevage. His wines have earned a strong following among collectors and sommeliers for their precision, texture, and age-worthiness, and the Premier Cru Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux stands as one of the domaine’s key expressions of the more structured, mineral side of the Côte de Nuits.
