Description

Bruno Clavelier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Bio 2019 is a poised, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey’s most characterful Premier Cru sites, crafted by the Vosne-Romanée master, Domaine Bruno Clavelier. Certified organic (“Bio”) and produced in tiny quantities from just 0.22 ha, this wine offers a refined, fresh expression of Gevrey that leans more on purity and elegance than sheer power. Sitting just beside the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, Les Corbeaux combines top-tier pedigree with the cooler influence of the Combe Lavaux, resulting in a wine of impressive finesse and clarity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Les Corbeaux shows a vibrant, translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a glossy, youthful rim that hints at its energy and precision. The nose is intensely aromatic yet controlled, offering layers of wild raspberry, red cherry and strawberry, interwoven with notes of rose petals, violets, crushed stones, subtle forest floor and a fine touch of spice and graphite from its élevage. On the palate, the wine is taut, finely etched and beautifully balanced, showcasing the lifted, cool-fruited side of Gevrey-Chambertin. Juicy red berries and cherry skin dominate initially, followed by nuances of cranberry, blood orange zest, fine black tea, and a delicate, savory minerality. The tannins are ultra-fine yet firm, giving a refined structure, while the fresh acidity – enhanced by the cooler airflows from the Combe Lavaux – keeps everything focused and long. The finish is persistent, precise, and saline, with a lingering impression of red fruit and stone. This 2019 has the concentration and backbone to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, developing more forest floor, truffle, and sous-bois complexity over time.

Production
Les Corbeaux is a Premier Cru climat located just below the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, on similar limestone-rich, stony soils with a thin topsoil that naturally limits yields and concentrates the fruit. The site benefits from a slightly cooler microclimate due to the air currents descending from the Combe Lavaux, lending the wine its hallmark freshness and precision. Domaine Bruno Clavelier farms the vineyard organically (Bio), with old vines rooted deeply into the rocky terroir, and all work in the vineyard is done with an emphasis on biodiversity and low intervention. Harvest is carried out by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection of the bunches. In the cellar, Clavelier follows a classic, minimalist Burgundian approach: gentle extraction, partial whole-cluster use depending on the vintage, indigenous yeast fermentation in open vats, and élevage in French oak barrels (with a restrained percentage of new oak) to preserve purity of fruit and terroir transparency. The wine is bottled with minimal fining and filtration, keeping the natural texture and energy intact.

Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes that highlight its elegance and mineral-driven structure. Think roasted duck breast with cherries, guinea fowl, veal tenderloin with wild mushrooms, pigeon, or game birds, as well as Burgundy classics such as coq au vin or a delicately sauced boeuf bourguignon. It also shines alongside earthy vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto, truffle-infused dishes, or roasted root vegetables with herbs, and can be served with fine cheeses such as Brie de Meaux, Reblochon, or a mild Comté. Serve at 15–16°C to showcase its aromatic complexity and silkiness. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the wine open up and soften the structure; after 7–8 years of bottle age, a brief, gentle decant will be sufficient mainly for sediment.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is based in Vosne-Romanée and has become one of the most respected small domaines on the Côte de Nuits, known for its old-vine holdings and unwavering commitment to organic viticulture and terroir expression. Descended from a long line of vignerons, Bruno Clavelier took over the family vineyards and gradually shifted the domaine towards certified organic farming, low yields, and traditional, low-intervention winemaking. While rooted in Vosne-Romanée, the domaine also holds prized parcels in neighboring appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, including the Premier Cru Les Corbeaux. Clavelier’s wines are celebrated for their precision, energy, and ability to translate subtle differences in terroir, placing the domaine firmly among the leading producers of the Côte de Nuits and making his bottlings highly sought after by Burgundy enthusiasts worldwide.
