Description

Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveaux Bio 2021 is a beautifully poised, organically farmed Premier Cru Pinot Noir from one of Chambolle’s most coveted sites. With only a small number of bottles available, this is a wine for collectors and Burgundy lovers who value finesse over power. La Combe d'Orveaux sits in a cool, high-lying combe just above some of the village’s grandest terroirs, giving a wine of striking purity, tension, and perfume. Its unique selling point lies in the marriage of old-vine, certified organic viticulture with an ultra-classic, low-intervention Burgundian style. Bruno Clavelier’s approach highlights the vineyard’s limestone-rich soils and airy exposure, producing a Pinot Noir that is at once delicate, detailed, and intensely expressive. Historically, La Combe d'Orveaux has been admired by insiders for delivering near–Grand Cru character, thanks to its position bordering some of the most illustrious parcels of Musigny and Echézeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Combe d'Orveaux shows a luminous, medium ruby color with a translucent edge, typical of finely extracted Chambolle. Swirl the glass and you’ll see a wine of finesse rather than density, promising lift and elegance over sheer weight. The nose is immediately seductive: wild red berries, crushed raspberries, and morello cherry mingle with notes of rose petals, violets, and a delicate hint of peony. With air, layers of subtle spice—white pepper, clove, and a touch of star anise—emerge alongside chalky minerality and a gentle whisper of forest floor and fine tea leaves. It’s aromatic, floral, and precise rather than overtly opulent. On the palate, the 2021 is refined and linear, with a silken texture carried by vibrant, cool-vintage acidity. Juicy red currant and cherry fruit are framed by ultra-fine, talc-like tannins, giving a sense of structure without harshness. The mid-palate shows a savoury, saline edge and stony minerality that speaks clearly of its high, limestone-dominated terroir. The finish is long, pure and mouth-watering, with lingering red fruit, spice and floral notes that slowly unfurl in the glass. This is a wine built for graceful evolution rather than immediate impact. While already aromatic and engaging in youth, it will benefit from cellaring over the next 5–10 years, and in strong conditions can easily evolve for a decade or more, gaining further complexity, silkier texture and more pronounced sous-bois and truffle nuances.

Production
La Combe d'Orveaux is a high, breezy Premier Cru site in Chambolle-Musigny, overlooking some of the village’s most prestigious vineyards and backed by the cool air of the combe. The soils are very limestone-rich with thin topsoil, stones and fractured rock, giving naturally low yields and a distinct mineral tension in the wines. Domaine Bruno Clavelier farms these parcels organically (certified), with great emphasis on soil life, deep root systems and balanced, living vines. Harvesting is done by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery—especially important in a cooler, low-yield year like 2021. Vinification follows a traditional, low-intervention Burgundian approach: a careful proportion of whole bunches may be retained depending on the vintage to bring additional freshness and aromatic lift, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, and extraction is gentle to respect the finesse of Chambolle’s tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) to polish texture and add subtle spice, without masking the vineyard’s signature purity and floral elegance.

Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru excels with refined, subtly flavored dishes that mirror its elegance. Think roasted or sautéed veal, free-range chicken with morel cream, duck breast with a light cherry or redcurrant jus, or delicate lamb dishes. It also shines with earthy accompaniments such as mushroom fricassée, truffled risotto, root vegetable gratins, and semi-soft cheeses like Comté, Tomme de Savoie or mild washed-rind cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its perfume and finesse—slightly cooler if the room is warm. In its youth, decanting for 30–45 minutes helps the aromatics open and smooths the structure; with more bottle age (7+ years), a brief, gentle decant mainly to remove any sediment is sufficient. Use a Burgundy bowl-shaped glass to fully appreciate its aromatic precision and textural delicacy.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clavelier is a highly respected, family-run estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with holdings in some of the most sought-after villages of the Côte de Nuits, including Chambolle-Musigny. Bruno Clavelier took over in the late 1980s and has become known for his unwavering commitment to organic viticulture, old vines and terroir transparency long before such practices became fashionable. The domaine’s parcels are often very old, massale-selected vineyards that yield naturally low quantities of intensely characterful fruit. In the context of Burgundy, Clavelier is regarded as a benchmark for pure, classically styled, site-expressive Pinot Noir, with a particular talent for capturing the lace-like texture of Chambolle and the sensual depth of Vosne. Over the years, the domaine has earned a loyal following among sommeliers, collectors and Burgundy insiders, and its wines are regularly praised in leading international wine guides and critics’ reports for their precision, elegance and aging potential.
