Description

Bruno Clair Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2017 in magnum format is a benchmark Grand Cru Burgundy that captures the elegance and finesse of this celebrated terroir. Sourced from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most revered climats, it marries depth, power and remarkable purity of red fruit, already praised by critics as one of the standout wines of the vintage. The larger 1.5 L bottle format enhances its aging potential, making it an exceptional choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2017 Clos de Bèze shows a luminous, medium ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is open and generous, led by red fruits—wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry—layered with forest floor, rose petals, subtle spice and a touch of refined oak. There is an earthy, almost mineral undertone that adds seriousness and complexity, reflecting the great terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet intensely flavored, with fine, silky, fully-saturated tannins that give structure without any harshness. The texture is subtly creamy from beautifully integrated oak, carrying layers of red and dark berries, hints of blood orange, sweet spice and a cool, stony freshness. The finish is long, lifted and almost sorbet-like in its refreshing precision, suggesting excellent balance and energy. In magnum, this is built for long-term cellaring; it can be enjoyed now with ample aeration but will continue to develop additional nuance over 10–20+ years.

Production
Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of the crown jewels of the Côte de Nuits, with Bruno Clair farming prime parcels on these revered limestone and marl slopes above Gevrey-Chambertin. The old vines of Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir being the classic red grape of Burgundy) are tended with great care, typically using sustainable and largely manual vineyard practices to limit yields and concentrate the fruit. Harvest is done by hand, with careful sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. Vinification traditionally involves destemming most or all of the fruit, a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation, and patient extraction to emphasize finesse over power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a significant but judicious use of new oak—to add texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru demands refined cuisine: think roast duck with cherries, venison or hare, côte de veau, pigeon, or truffle-infused dishes. It also shines with classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin, beef bourguignon and game birds, as well as aged cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without muting the fruit. For current drinking, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended, especially from magnum, to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant just to remove any sediment.

Producer
Domaine Bruno Clair was founded in the 1970s, building on the legacy of the historic Clair family, who have deep roots in Burgundy and were instrumental in shaping some of the region’s most admired domaines. Today, Bruno Clair is recognized as a reference-point producer in the Côte de Nuits, with holdings in many of Gevrey-Chambertin’s and Morey-Saint-Denis’ top sites, including the legendary Chambertin Clos de Bèze. The domaine is known for a thoughtful, restrained style that emphasizes clarity of fruit, precision and terroir-driven character rather than overt power. Over the years, Bruno Clair’s wines have earned a reputation among collectors and sommeliers worldwide for their consistency, age-worthiness and ability to express the nuanced differences between Burgundy’s great vineyards.
