Description
Brovia Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggione 2012 is a refined, single-vineyard expression of Nebbiolo from the Roero area in Piemonte. Sourced from the southwest-facing Valmaggione vineyard on sand and limestone soils, it delivers lifted florals, pure red fruit and a finely etched structure. This is Nebbiolo without Barolo’s imposing tannins, yet with comparable depth, nuance and the hallmark elegance that has made Brovia a benchmark name in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Valmaggione shows a luminous, pale garnet-red hue with a delicately brick-tinged rim—classic for well-developed Nebbiolo. The nose opens with rose petals and dried flowers, followed by red cherries, dried strawberries, blood orange peel and a subtle undercurrent of leather and truffle, hinting at bottle age and its Roero origins.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied, precise and beautifully balanced. Bright, refreshing acidity frames flavors of sour cherry, wild strawberry, orange zest and a touch of spice, supported by fine, chalky tannins rather than aggressive grip. A saline-mineral edge runs through the finish, emphasizing the sandy, calcareous terroir and leaving the mouth refreshed rather than weighed down. Now well into its drinking window, the 2012 shows harmonious development and should continue to drink well for several more years, offering evolving savory and tertiary notes rather than primary fruit intensity.
Production
Valmaggione lies in the Roero area of Piemonte, with sandy, limestone-rich soils and a southwest exposure that encourages slow, even ripening while preserving Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and perfume. Grapes are harvested manually in October, allowing careful selection of bunches at optimal maturity. After a gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to protect the delicacy of the aromatics and maintain a clean, precise fruit profile. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in stainless steel, a deliberate choice that refines the tannins and adds a subtle spicy complexity without the imprint of oak, resulting in a pure and transparent expression of site and grape.
Food & Serving
This elegant Nebbiolo is a natural partner for classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with butter and sage, agnolotti del plin, vitello tonnato, or veal scaloppine. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, truffle-based dishes, roast poultry, pork, and semi-hard cheeses like Taleggio or Fontina. Serve at 16–18 °C to showcase its aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. Decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up fully, especially if it has been stored cool, allowing the floral and earthy nuances to unfold in the glass.
Producer
Founded in 1863 and family-run for generations, Brovia is one of Piemonte’s most respected traditional producers, best known for its terroir-driven Barolo and characterful Nebbiolo bottlings. Working with prime vineyards in Barolo and select sites in Roero, the estate has built a reputation for wines that are both classically structured and finely detailed, always prioritizing vineyard expression over cellar manipulation. Their Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione has become a reference point for how the Roero’s sandy, calcareous soils can produce Nebbiolo of remarkable finesse, and Brovia’s consistent critical acclaim has cemented their status as a key ambassador for the region’s high-quality, ageworthy reds.
