Description
Brovia Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione 2011 is a beautifully transparent expression of Nebbiolo from the sandy hillsides of Roero in Piemonte. Drawn from the single vineyard Valmaggione, it combines aromatic delicacy with the structure and depth that have made Nebbiolo one of Italy’s most revered grapes. This 2011 vintage reflects Brovia’s steadfast commitment to traditional craftsmanship, delivering a wine that is both authentic and seriously ageworthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale to medium garnet core gently fading toward brick and terracotta at the rim – a classic, evolved Nebbiolo hue. The nose is complex and graceful, with lifted notes of dried rose petals, sour and dried cherry, pomegranate, blood orange zest and a touch of raspberry, layered with hints of white pepper, truffle, tobacco leaf and subtle underbrush. A fine mineral edge and a whisper of dried herbs add further nuance as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is an elegant, medium to medium-full bodied Nebbiolo, with ripe yet finely etched tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that speaks to its cool Roero origins. Flavours of red cherry, cranberry, dried strawberry and orange peel are wrapped around a savoury core of tea leaf, anise and earthy spice, with a distinctly mineral, almost saline finish that lingers. The warm 2011 vintage has given the wine a rounder, more approachable texture, yet it still carries the backbone to age. At this stage it is entering a beautiful drinking window, with mature complexity already present, but well-stored bottles have the potential to develop gracefully for several more years.
Production
Valmaggione is a steep, well-exposed site in the Roero zone of Piemonte, characterized by sandy, calcareous soils that naturally yield Nebbiolo of perfume, finesse and fine-grained tannin. Brovia farms the vineyard traditionally, with careful green work and strict yield control, and the grapes are harvested by hand in early October to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit selection in the vineyard. After a gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with a classic, patient maceration to extract aroma, colour and structure without harshness. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional choice that polishes the tannins and adds subtle nuance while keeping the focus firmly on the grape, the vineyard and the vintage.
Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d’Alba is a superb partner for classic dishes from Piemonte and beyond: think tajarin pasta with truffle, risotto with porcini mushrooms, roast veal, duck, lamb, braised short ribs or game birds. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano or mature Pecorino, and with earthy vegetable dishes based on mushrooms, root vegetables and herbs. Serve at 16–18 °C; in its current mature phase, decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the wine shed any remaining tightness and allows the more delicate floral and truffle notes to fully emerge.
Producer
Founded in 1863 in the village of Castiglione Falletto, Brovia is one of Piemonte’s benchmark traditional estates, long admired by enthusiasts for its meticulous, vineyard-driven approach. Still family-owned and run, the winery has built its reputation on expressing the nuances of top sites in Barolo and the surrounding hills, with a style that favours finesse, clarity and longevity over flashiness. Brovia’s holdings in choice crus and carefully selected Roero vineyards like Valmaggione allow them to craft Nebbiolos that are both intellectually engaging and deeply pleasurable to drink. Consistent critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors have cemented Brovia’s place among the most respected names in the region.
