Description

Brovia Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione 2010 is a benchmark example of how Nebbiolo from the Roero side of Piemonte can be both feather‑light on its feet and deeply complex. Sourced from the sand- and limestone-rich Valmaggione vineyard, this wine shows a floral, mineral elegance that contrasts beautifully with the more powerful, tannic expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. From the outstanding and cool 2010 vintage, it captures a classic, ageworthy profile that has evolved gracefully in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Valmaggione shows a translucent garnet hue with a brick-tinged rim, reflecting its maturation and traditional handling of Nebbiolo. The nose is lifted and expressive, offering aromas of dried rose petals, violets, red cherries and wild strawberries, layered with hints of licorice, black tea, truffle and a gentle mineral note. On the palate, the wine is medium to medium‑full bodied, precise and finely etched rather than heavy. The tannins are firm yet refined, carrying the hallmark structure of Nebbiolo without the aggressive grip often found in Barolo. Bright, lively acidity keeps everything fresh and focused, while a subtle, almost saline minerality lingers on the finish. With time in bottle, this 2010 has developed tertiary nuances of leather, forest floor and tobacco, yet it still shows striking energy and length. It is drinking beautifully now but can continue to evolve positively for another 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and harmony.

Production
The fruit for this wine comes from the Valmaggione vineyard in Roero, where sandy and calcareous soils give Nebbiolo a particularly perfumed and finely textured character. The site’s well-exposed slopes and cooler conditions in 2010 allowed for a long, even ripening season, preserving aromatic intensity and fresh acidity. Grapes were harvested by hand in early October, with careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Brovia followed a traditional vinification, using extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic depth from the skins. Fermentation and maturation took place primarily in stainless-steel tanks, where the wine spent about 18 months to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, followed by further bottle aging before release to allow the structure to knit together.

Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d’Alba is a versatile partner at the table, especially with classic Piemontese fare. It pairs beautifully with tajarin pasta with butter and sage or ragù, veal or pork roasts, mushroom risotto, game birds, and dishes featuring truffle, porcini or aged hard cheeses. More adventurous pairings could include duck breast, lamb chops or charcuterie with earthy components. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its aromatics and balance; if opened now, decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the tertiary notes and floral perfume to fully emerge.

Producer
Founded in 1863 in the village of Castiglione Falletto, Brovia is one of Piemonte’s most respected and traditionally minded producers, renowned for its meticulous work in the vineyard and its transparent expressions of terroir. The estate has long focused on crafting site-specific Nebbiolo from top crus in Barolo as well as select plots in neighboring Roero, such as Valmaggione. Brovia’s wines are celebrated for their balance, precision and ageworthiness, and the estate is widely considered a reference point for classic, uncompromising Piemonte reds that remain faithful to both grape and place.
