Description

Brovia’s Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione 2009 is a beautifully mature expression of Nebbiolo from the prized Roero area of Piemonte. Sourced from the sand- and limestone-rich Valmaggione vineyard, it offers an aromatic, silkier take on the grape compared with the more powerful styles of Barolo and Barbaresco. The warm 2009 vintage delivered ripe, generous fruit and rounded tannins, making this a particularly inviting, harmonious wine that showcases both terroir and time in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a classic sign of well-evolved Nebbiolo. The nose is open and expressive, offering layers of ripe cherry and plum, dried roses, anise, and subtle leather, lifted by warm spice and hints of tobacco and underbrush. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a supple, rounded texture and fine, mature tannins. Flavors echo the aromas: macerated red cherry, dried red berries, and plum are wrapped in notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and a touch of dark chocolate. The acidity is well-integrated, keeping the wine lively despite its age, and the finish is long and persistent with savory, gently spicy nuances. This bottle is fully in its drinking window, showing developed tertiary complexity; it is best enjoyed now or over the next few years while its balance and aromatic detail are at their peak.

Production
The Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione comes from the Roero area of Piemonte, where sandy, calcareous soils lend a distinctive perfume and elegance to Nebbiolo. In the warm 2009 vintage, grapes were hand-harvested at the end of September to capture optimal ripeness while preserving freshness. Fermentation followed a traditional approach, with a longer maceration on the skins to draw out color, aroma and structure. After fermentation, the wine was aged for around 18 months in stainless steel tanks, allowing the purity of fruit and terroir to shine without the influence of new oak, followed by extended bottle aging to harmonize tannins and develop complexity.

Food & Serving
This mature Nebbiolo is a superb match for classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, braised veal or beef, and risotto with porcini or truffles. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18 °C; decanting for 30–60 minutes can help the wine open fully and shed any remaining bottle reduction, especially if it has been stored for many years. Pour gently, as a light sediment may be present due to age.

Producer
Brovia is a highly respected, family-run estate in Piemonte, known above all for its characterful, terroir-driven Nebbiolo wines. Founded in the 19th century and revitalized in the mid-20th century, the estate has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and a classic, non-interventionist approach in the cellar. While their Barolo bottlings often take center stage, cuvées like Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione demonstrate Brovia’s finesse with Nebbiolo outside the Barolo appellation, highlighting the aromatic delicacy and textural elegance that Roero’s sandy, calcareous soils can bring. Over the years, Brovia has earned a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts for wines that age gracefully and express their origin with clarity and authenticity.
