Description

Brovia Ciabot del Fi Barbera d’Alba 2012 is a mature, single-vineyard Barbera from one of Piemonte’s most respected traditional producers. Sourced exclusively from the Ciabot del Fi cru, this wine shows how serious, ageworthy and nuanced Barbera can be when treated with the same care as top Nebbiolo. The warm, dry 2012 vintage has given a concentrated, structured wine that is now entering a beautiful, harmonious drinking window, where primary fruit, spice and tertiary complexity meet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Ciabot del Fi shows a deep garnet core with brickish hues at the rim, reflecting over a decade of careful aging. The nose opens with sweet-sour cherries and macerated red plums, followed by dried rose petals, leather, balsamic notes, and subtle hints of tobacco and forest floor. With air, you may also pick up nuances of licorice, baking spices and a touch of savory herbs. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Barbera with the grape’s hallmark acidity now beautifully rounded and integrated. Flavors of ripe cherry, black raspberry and blood orange mingle with notes of dried fig, cured leather, balsamic, cocoa and a gentle smokiness from large Slavonian oak. The tannins are fine and velvety rather than firm, giving a supple, almost caressing texture, while the finish is long, savory and mouthwatering. Fully enjoyable now, it is at or near peak maturity, with enough structure and freshness to hold for several more years for those who enjoy more evolved tertiary character.

Production
Ciabot del Fi is a single vineyard within the Barbera d’Alba DOC, rooted in classic Piemontese hillside terroir with calcareous-clay soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Brovia works with traditional, low-intervention methods, harvesting by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful berry selection. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, allowing the vineyard character and vintage to express themselves without heavy manipulation. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 18 months in large Slavonian oak botti, which provide gentle oxygenation and textural refinement without overt oak flavors. It is then matured further in bottle before release, giving the Barbera time to knit together and develop the complex, savory nuances that define this 2012.

Food & Serving
This mature Barbera is a natural partner for classic Piemontese dishes and other hearty, savory cuisines. Think tajarin with ragù, braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, grilled sausages, roast pork, aged hard cheeses, mushroom risotto or truffle-inflected dishes. The vibrant yet rounded acidity cuts through rich preparations, while the wine’s evolved complexity complements slow-cooked flavors and umami. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in a generous red wine glass. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up and allows any sediment from bottle age to settle, revealing greater aromatic depth and textural harmony.

Producer
Founded in the mid-20th century, Brovia is a benchmark family estate in Castiglione Falletto in the heart of Piemonte, best known for its traditionally crafted, site-expressive Barolo and characterful Barbera and Dolcetto. The winery has long championed a classical, non-interventionist style: careful work in the vineyard, hand harvesting, native-yeast fermentations and aging in large botti rather than small barriques. This approach has earned Brovia a reputation among collectors and sommeliers for purity, balance and longevity across its range. While the estate’s crus like Rocche and Villero are iconic for Nebbiolo, cuvées such as Ciabot del Fi demonstrate Brovia’s belief that Barbera from top sites can be just as profound, ageworthy and expressive of Piemonte’s great terroirs.
