Description

Brovia Barolo Villero 2004 is a benchmark example of classic, traditionally crafted Barolo from one of Castiglione Falletto’s most esteemed crus. Sourced entirely from the Villero vineyard, it captures the vineyard’s hallmark combination of structure, elegance and aromatic complexity. The outstanding, cool-balanced 2004 vintage has endowed this wine with remarkable freshness, precision and the ability to age gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2004 Villero shows a luminous garnet core with a brick-tinged rim, already hinting at its beautiful evolution in bottle. The nose is refined and deeply layered, opening with dried rose petals and violets, followed by red cherry, redcurrant, balsamic notes, sweet spices, tobacco leaf, leather and a subtle earthy, mineral edge. On the palate, this is a poised, classically structured Barolo: full-bodied yet taut, with silky but still energetic tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. Flavours of sour cherry, red berries and dried flowers intertwine with hints of licorice, cedar, underbrush and a saline, mineral nuance. The finish is long, complex and persistent, with floral and spicy notes lingering gracefully. Although already in a beautiful drinking window, this 2004 still offers significant aging potential and is expected to evolve positively through 2035 and beyond, gaining further tertiary nuance and integration.

Production
The Nebbiolo for Brovia’s Barolo Villero comes from the renowned Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, a cru characterized by calcareous marl rich in clay and minerals. This terroir is known for producing Barolo with both firm structure and elegant aromatics. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. In keeping with Brovia’s firmly traditional philosophy, the must undergoes a long maceration of up to 30 days to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for around 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a gentle regime that preserves Nebbiolo’s purity while building depth, structure and longevity, before further maturation in bottle.

Food & Serving
This mature yet still vibrant Barolo pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, tagliatelle with ragù, aged Parmigiano Reggiano and other hard cheeses. Serve at around 18 °C for optimal expression. Given its age and structure, decanting for 2–4 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, soften the tannins and reveal its intricate layers of aroma and flavour.

Producer
Founded in the 19th century and family-run for generations, Brovia is one of Barolo’s classic, traditional estates, with holdings in some of the region’s most coveted crus, including Villero, Rocche di Castiglione and Garblèt Sue. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the winery has long been respected for its uncompromising commitment to terroir-driven, ageworthy Barolo made with minimal intervention and a steadfast adherence to long macerations and aging in large oak casks. Brovia’s single-vineyard bottlings, particularly from Villero, are considered reference points for the appellation, consistently earning high praise from critics and collectors for their elegance, precision and capacity to evolve gracefully over decades.
