Description

Brovia Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2010 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of the most revered crus in Castiglione Falletto, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo in a truly outstanding vintage. Rocche di Castiglione is famed for its chalk- and marl-rich soils, which give wines of remarkable finesse, lifted aromatics and a firm, mineral backbone. The 2010 vintage is already considered a modern classic in Barolo, uniting depth and power with an almost Burgundian elegance and precision, making this bottle a benchmark expression of both site and year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, reflecting its noble Nebbiolo lineage and graceful evolution. Swirling reveals impressive viscosity and clarity. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered: violet and dried rose petals unfold first, followed by ripe red cherries, wild raspberries and a touch of dark plum. Underneath the vibrant fruit lie more tertiary tones—liquorice, leather, truffle, dried herbs and sweet, fine tobacco, all interwoven with a subtle, chalky minerality. On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied yet supremely poised, with firm but beautifully polished tannins that are already integrating into the fruit. Bright, refreshing acidity keeps everything focused and linear, while the mineral streak from Rocche di Castiglione adds energy and a faintly salty edge. Flavours mirror the nose: red berry fruits, floral notes and spice, layered with earth, forest floor and savoury complexity that build through a long, elegant and persistent finish. From the 2010 vintage, this wine offers impressive aging potential: while already drinking wonderfully with proper air, it will continue to evolve and gain further nuance over 15–25 years from the harvest, developing more truffle, leather and dried fruit notes over time.

Production
Rocche di Castiglione is one of Castiglione Falletto’s most celebrated vineyards, an amphitheatre of steep slopes with calcareous marl and chalk-rich soils that naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s aromatic lift and precision. Brovia farms the site traditionally, with careful, manual work in the vineyard and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Nebbiolo grapes make it to the cellar. After harvest, the grapes undergo a long maceration on the skins—often up to 30 days—to fully extract aroma, colour and tannic structure, in line with classic Barolo methods. Fermentation is followed by approximately 24 months of maturation in large Slavonian oak botti, which respect the character of the fruit and terroir rather than imposing heavy oak flavours, and the wine is then given additional bottle aging before release to allow the components to harmonise.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef or veal (osso buco, brasato al Barolo), roast lamb, game birds, venison and dishes featuring porcini mushrooms or truffle—particularly classic Piemontese fare like tajarin with white truffle. Aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, mature pecorino or Castelmagno also work beautifully with its structure and complexity. Serve at 17–18 °C in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the aromas to fully unfurl. Given its structure and pedigree, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended, especially at this stage of its life, to soften the tannins and open up the full aromatic spectrum.

Producer
Founded in the 19th century and family-run for generations, Brovia is regarded as one of Barolo’s benchmark traditional producers, particularly known for its meticulous single-vineyard expressions. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the estate has long championed classic, terroir-driven Barolo, favouring long macerations, aging in large neutral botti and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar. Their holdings in top crus—Rocche di Castiglione among them—allow Brovia to produce some of the region’s most characterful and ageworthy Nebbiolo. Over the decades, Brovia’s wines have gained a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers alike, consistently praised for their purity, balance and faithful expression of site and vintage.
