Description
Brovia’s Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2006 is a classic, single-vineyard Barolo that marries firm structure with haunting finesse. Sourced from the famed Rocche di Castiglione cru in Castiglione Falletto, this wine showcases Nebbiolo’s most nuanced and ageworthy expression. The cooler 2006 vintage adds vibrant acidity and clarity, giving this Barolo the backbone to age gracefully for decades while already offering remarkable complexity in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Rocche di Castiglione shows an intense garnet red core gradually fading to brick-orange hues at the rim, a hallmark of elegant, maturing Nebbiolo. The nose is lifted and perfumed, with striking aromas of dried rose petals, violets and red cherries, layered with notes of raspberry, redcurrant, sweet spices, licorice, tobacco leaf, truffle and a distinctly mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is taut, precise and full-bodied, with a linear, driving acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. The tannins are firm yet refined, perfectly in line with the 2006 vintage’s reputation for structure, and they frame flavors of sour cherry, wild red berries, dried herbs, earthy truffle and subtle forest floor. The finish is long, savory and mineral, echoing with herbs, spice and red fruit. Still very much on its plateau of maturity, this 2006 has the concentration and energy to evolve beautifully for 20–25 years from the vintage, rewarding patient cellaring while already giving immense pleasure to lovers of traditional Barolo.
Production
Rocche di Castiglione is one of Castiglione Falletto’s most revered vineyards, marked by calcareous marl soils streaked with sand that contribute both aromatic lift and firm tannic structure to the wines. Brovia farms this cru traditionally, with manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo clusters are selected. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a long maceration on the skins—up to 30 days—to extract the full spectrum of color, aroma and tannin. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks before the wine is aged for around 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a classic Barolo élevage that allows slow, harmonious development without overwhelming the wine’s delicate, terroir-driven character. Further bottle aging refines the texture and brings additional complexity before release.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, veal shank (ossobuco), game birds, roasted lamb, truffle risotto, mushroom pastas and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Its combination of structure, acidity and earthy nuance makes it particularly compelling alongside dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Serve at 17–18 °C for optimal expression. Given its age and traditional structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromas to fully unfurl and to soften the tannins, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Founded in the mid-20th century, Brovia is a family-run estate that has become one of Barolo’s most respected names, especially among enthusiasts of traditional, terroir-focused wines. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the estate holds prized parcels in some of the region’s most important crus, including Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Garblèt Sué. Brovia’s philosophy emphasizes careful vineyard work, modest yields and classic vinification and aging in large Slavonian botti, preserving the purity of Nebbiolo and the distinct identity of each site. Over the years, the winery has garnered a loyal following and critical acclaim for producing Baroli that are both deeply rooted in Piedmontese tradition and built for long, graceful aging in the cellar.
