Description
Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 1999 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Castiglione Falletto’s most revered crus and one of Piemonte’s most respected traditional estates. Drawn from the Garblèt Sue vineyard—known for its elegant yet firmly structured Barolo—this mature 1999 bottling captures a benchmark vintage now entering its peak drinking window. Long aging in large neutral casks, combined with meticulous organic-minded viticulture, delivers a wine that speaks clearly of both place and time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1999 Garblet Sue shows a deep garnet core shading to brick and tawny hues at the rim, a hallmark of gracefully evolved Barolo. Swirl the glass and you’ll find an aromatic tapestry of dried rose petals, violets, tar, and earthy truffle, layered with notes of cherry liqueur, dried strawberry, leather, tobacco leaf and a subtle balsamic lift. Hints of anise, cedar and underbrush add further complexity as the wine opens.
On the palate, this is a traditionally styled, terroir-driven Barolo with the firm backbone one expects from Castiglione Falletto, now softened by over two decades of bottle age. The Nebbiolo tannins are fine-grained and resolved yet still present, framing flavors of macerated red cherries, blood orange, dried plum, licorice and savory herbs. Secondary and tertiary notes—forest floor, porcini, worn leather and sweet spice—unfold with air, leading to a long, savory, mineral-driven finish. From a classic vintage such as 1999, this wine offers excellent aging potential; while it is fully enjoyable now, well-stored bottles can continue to develop further nuance over the next 5–8 years.
Production
Garblet Sue is one of Brovia’s prime crus in Castiglione Falletto, a village at the heart of the Barolo zone known for combining structure with finesse. The vineyard’s calcareous marl and limestone-rich soils, interspersed with pockets of heavier clay, give Nebbiolo both aromatic lift and firm tannic grip, while the hillside exposure ensures slow, even ripening. Brovia farms their vineyards with an essentially organic philosophy, performing regular soil analyses, restricting yields through careful pruning, and thinning grape clusters in summer when necessary. All harvesting is done by hand, with Nebbiolo for Barolo picked later in the season—typically around mid-October—after earlier-ripening varieties like Dolcetto, Arneis, and Barbera. In the cellar, Brovia adheres to a traditional Barolo regimen: extended maceration on the skins, followed by long aging in large, neutral oak botti, allowing the character of Nebbiolo and the Garblet Sue terroir to shine without intrusive new oak influence.
Food & Serving
This mature Barolo is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes, especially those that echo its Piedmontese origins. Think braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, truffle-infused risotto, tajarin with porcini or white truffle, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatics without emphasizing alcohol or tannin. Given its age and traditional structure, decant gently 1–2 hours before serving to let any sediment settle and allow the bouquet to fully unfurl.
Producer
Founded by Giacinto Brovia in 1863 in Castiglione Falletto, Brovia is a historic, family-run estate at the heart of the Barolo appellation. After a 30-year pause in production due to phylloxera, economic difficulties, and two world wars, the winery was revived in 1953 by brothers Giacinto and Raffaele, the founder’s grandsons—Giacinto bringing oenological expertise to the cellar and Raffaele overseeing the vineyards as an agronomist. Today, the fourth generation, sisters Cristina and Elena, lead the estate with the same unwavering commitment to meticulous viticulture and classical Barolo craftsmanship. Brovia owns parcels in several of the most esteemed crus of the region—Rocche, Villero, Garblèt Sue in Castiglione Falletto and Brea in Serralunga—totaling about 19.2 hectares, with more than half devoted to Barolo. The estate’s traditional approach, reliance on large casks, and quietly exacting vineyard work have earned it a reputation as one of Piemonte’s reference-point producers for ageworthy, terroir-expressive Barolo.
