Description
Brovia Barolo Ca’ Mia 2008 is a benchmark single-vineyard Barolo from the famed Brea cru in Serralunga d’Alba, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo and bottled here in an impressive 1.5 L magnum. This is a deeply structured, classically styled Barolo that captures the mineral drive and longevity that Serralunga is known for, while showcasing the poise and freshness of the 2008 vintage. For collectors and serious Barolo lovers, Ca’ Mia 2008 stands out as one of Brovia’s most emblematic and ageworthy wines, made in a resolutely traditional style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Ca’ Mia shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, reflecting both its grape variety and graceful evolution in bottle. Swirl the glass and you’ll find a complex, layered nose: dried roses and violets, ripe and macerated cherries, hints of black tea, licorice, truffle and undergrowth, with subtle notes of tobacco leaf and warm spices emerging with air.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and firmly structured, yet remarkably poised. The tannins are ripe but still assertive, offering the classic Barolo grip that frames flavors of cherry, redcurrant and plum, intertwined with dried herbs, anise, earth and a marked, almost saline minerality from the Brea vineyard’s calcareous marl soils. A vibrant, refreshing acidity keeps everything lifted and drives a long, persistent finish with layers of red fruit, spice and savory, earthy nuances. Already showing impressive harmony, especially in magnum, this 2008 Ca’ Mia still has the structure and concentration to develop further complexity over the next 15–20 years, and potentially beyond under proper cellaring.
Production
The Ca’ Mia bottling comes from the Brea vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized terroirs, where steep slopes, a relatively cool exposition and calcareous marl interlaced with sand and clay give Nebbiolo both depth and a pronounced mineral backbone. The 2008 growing season in Piemonte was marked by a cool spring and a long, dry summer, followed by significant diurnal swings in September, allowing a slow, even ripening of the grapes. Brovia harvests the Nebbiolo by hand, carefully selecting bunches in the vineyard before gentle destemming. Fermentation is carried out in traditional cement tanks, with a long maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and tannin in a measured way. After fermentation, the wine is aged for about 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, which respect the fruit and terroir without imposing heavy oak flavors, followed by extended bottle aging before release to allow the firm Serralunga tannins to begin integrating.
Food & Serving
This is a classic, gastronomic Barolo that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Try it with braised beef or veal shank, game birds, slow-cooked lamb, or traditional Piemontese specialties such as brasato al Barolo and tajarin with white truffle. Mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or hard alpine cheeses also make superb partners, amplifying the wine’s earthy and floral nuances. Serve at 16–18 °C and, given both the vintage and magnum format, decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften. In a multi-course meal, it’s best placed with the main dish or a rich cheese course, where its structure and complexity can be fully appreciated.
Producer
Founded in 1863, Brovia is one of Barolo’s historic family estates and a reference point for traditionally made wines from Piemonte. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the winery has long championed the individuality of top crus such as Rocche, Villero and Brea (Ca’ Mia), emphasizing terroir and balance over power and new oak. Today, Brovia is celebrated for its meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention cellar practices and consistent quality across vintages, producing Baroli that are both classic in style and remarkably ageworthy. Their single-vineyard wines, including Ca’ Mia, are widely regarded as benchmarks of their respective sites and regularly receive strong acclaim from critics and collectors alike, cementing Brovia’s status as one of the most respected names in the region.
