Description

Brovia Barbera Sori del Drago 2013 is a refined, terroir-driven Barbera d’Alba that captures the elegance and energy of classic Piemonte. Sourced from Brovia’s historic south and south-east facing parcels on calcareous clay soils, this wine balances ripe, dark fruit with Barbera’s naturally vibrant acidity. From a beautifully balanced 2013 vintage, it offers both immediate pleasure and impressive aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sori del Drago 2013 shows a deep, luminous ruby red hue with subtle violet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure notes of dark cherries and blackberries, followed by undertones of licorice, dried Mediterranean herbs and a gentle balsamic lift. As it breathes, more complexity unfolds—subtle spice, a touch of earth and a whisper of dried rose. On the palate, this Barbera is medium to full-bodied, combining generous, ripe dark berry fruit with the grape’s hallmark lively acidity. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, giving a supple, velvety texture rather than grip, while the balanced 14% alcohol adds warmth without heaviness. Flavors of black cherry, plum and blackberry intertwine with hints of licorice, savory spice and a faint, savory balsamic note. The finish is long and persistent, driven by fresh acidity and layered fruit. From the classic 2013 vintage, this wine has evolved beautifully but still has structure and freshness to continue developing for several more years in a good cellar.

Production
The Barbera for Sori del Drago 2013 comes from Brovia’s long-established vineyards in Barbera d’Alba, where vines grow on calcareous and clay-rich soils with excellent exposure to the sun on south and south-east facing slopes. These conditions promote slow, even ripening, preserving aromatic detail and natural acidity. Harvesting is done entirely by hand to ensure careful bunch selection at the optimal moment of maturity. After gentle destemming, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation to capture freshness and precision of fruit. The wine is then matured for around 18 months in large, used Slavonian oak casks, a traditional Piemontese approach that avoids overt oak flavors, instead allowing the Barbera’s pure fruit, spice notes and terroir character to shine through.

Food & Serving
This Barbera is a versatile food wine and an excellent partner for rich, savory dishes from both Italian and broader European cuisines. It pairs beautifully with classic Piemontese fare such as vitello tonnato, agnolotti del plin, tajarin with ragù, braised beef, osso buco and roasted or grilled lamb. It also works very well with charcuterie, mature semi-hard cheeses, mushroom dishes and hearty poultry preparations like roast chicken or duck. Serve at 16–18 °C, slightly cooler than room temperature, to emphasize freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially at this age, to let the wine fully open and reveal its nuanced layers of fruit, spice and balsamic notes.

Producer
Founded in 1863 in the village of Castiglione Falletto, Brovia is one of Piemonte’s most respected family-run estates, renowned for its classic, terroir-focused wines. Over generations, the Brovia family has carefully assembled an enviable collection of top vineyard sites, particularly for Barolo, and applies the same meticulous care and traditional philosophy to their Barbera. The estate is known for low-intervention, vineyard-driven winemaking that highlights soil, exposure and vintage rather than heavy-handed cellar techniques. Brovia’s wines are consistently praised by international critics and collectors for their purity, balance and age-worthiness, making the estate a reference point in the Barolo and Barbera d’Alba appellations.
