Description
Brane Cantenac 2021 is a refined, classically styled red Bordeaux from one of Margaux’s most storied estates. This Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) shows how a cooler, more demanding vintage can still deliver poise, depth, and notable finesse in the right hands. It’s a wine where precise selection in the vineyard and cellar lets the character of Brane’s exceptional terroir shine through, even in a challenging year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Brane Cantenac shows a deep, vivid ruby color with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose opens with sweet, dark berry notes—think blackcurrant and ripe blackberry—layered with hints of fresh mint, vanilla pod, and subtle baking spices from its time in new oak.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a surprisingly generous core of fruit for the vintage. The texture is bright yet velvety, guided by fine-grained, structuring oak tannins that bring both grip and polish. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, and plum intermingle with cedar, spice, and a distinct vanillin character on the finish. There’s good depth and concentration without heaviness, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps everything lifted. While already approachable with some air, it will benefit from a few years of cellaring to better integrate the oak and reveal more nuance, with a likely drinking window of roughly 2026–2038.
Production
Brane Cantenac’s vineyards lie on the deep gravel soils of Margaux in the Médoc—classic Cabernet country where excellent drainage and heat retention help grapes ripen evenly, even in cooler years like 2021. The estate practices meticulous parcel-by-parcel selection, harvesting by hand to ensure only optimally ripe, healthy bunches make it to the winery. After careful sorting, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with maceration adapted to preserve freshness and finesse rather than sheer power. Malolactic fermentation in a higher proportion of new oak barrels for this vintage adds creaminess and a pronounced vanilla-spice profile, followed by élevage in French oak (with a significant portion new) to build structure, complexity, and age-worthiness.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Brane Cantenac is a versatile Margaux that pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled or pan-seared beef, duck breast, or veal with morel sauce. It also works well with game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the oak-derived tannins and allow the dark fruit, mint, and spice notes to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Brane Cantenac is one of the historic names of Margaux, classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification and long admired for its elegance and terroir expression. The estate’s origins date back to the 18th century, and its reputation was cemented when Baron de Brane—known as the “Napoleon of the Vines”—gave his name to the property. Today, under the stewardship of the Lurton family, Brane Cantenac has reaffirmed its position as a benchmark in the appellation, focusing on precision viticulture, sensitive winemaking, and a style that emphasizes finesse over brute power. The château is widely recognized for producing some of the most refined and perfumed wines of Margaux, particularly in vintages where careful vineyard work and strict selection are crucial.
