Description

Boscarelli Il Nocio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2013 is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese from one of the most respected estates in Montepulciano. Crafted only in top vintages, it represents the purist, most elegant side of Vino Nobile. The 2013 was awarded the coveted “Tre Bicchieri” (3 Glasses) by Gambero Rosso in 2018, underlining its status as one of Italy’s standout wines of the year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Il Nocio 2013 shows a luminous, deep ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is refined and complex, offering layers of sour cherry, black cherry and wild berries interwoven with notes of violet, dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, leather, and a subtle hint of sweet spice and cedar from barrel aging. On the palate, this is a structured yet supremely elegant Sangiovese, with finely etched tannins and vibrant acidity that carry the fruit with precision. Flavors of red and black cherry, plum and pomegranate are joined by savory undertones of herbs, earth, and a gentle mineral edge typical of Montepulciano’s best sites. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and dried flowers. While already beautifully harmonious, the 2013 still has excellent aging potential and can comfortably evolve and gain further complexity over the next decade or more if stored well.

Production
Il Nocio comes from the historic single vineyard “Il Nocio,” a site particularly prized for its sandy, clay-limestone soils and optimal exposure in the hills around Montepulciano in Tuscany. The terroir provides excellent drainage and natural concentration, while the elevation and breezes help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity in the Sangiovese grapes (locally known as Prugnolo Gentile). Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and winery to ensure only the finest clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks or traditional wooden vats, with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatics rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged in carefully chosen oak—often large casks and/or neutral barrels—to refine the tannins and build complexity without overwhelming the grape’s natural character, before further bottle aging prior to release.

Food & Serving
This sophisticated Vino Nobile pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine and refined, savory dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, game birds, braised beef, wild boar ragù, or hearty mushroom and truffle dishes. It also works wonderfully with aged pecorino and other firm, mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially at this stage of its evolution, to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its nuanced bouquet.

Producer
Poderi Boscarelli is a family-run estate founded in the 1960s in the Cervognano area of Montepulciano, one of the appellation’s most revered zones. Over the decades, Boscarelli has built a reputation as a benchmark producer of Vino Nobile, known for a classical, terroir-driven style that emphasizes elegance, aromatic purity, and longevity. Their careful work in the vineyard, low yields, and restrained use of oak have made them a reference point for Sangiovese in Tuscany. The Il Nocio bottling, in particular, is considered one of the estate’s flagship wines and has earned repeated critical acclaim, including top honors such as the 3 Glasses award from Gambero Rosso, underscoring Boscarelli’s importance in the region’s qualitative renaissance.
