Boekenhoutskloof, Syrah 2021

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2021 is one of the standout wines from Franschhoek and a benchmark expression of South African Syrah. Crafted by acclaimed winemaker Marc Kent, it combines deep concentration, lifted aromatic complexity and a polished, modern structure that reflects both old-world inspiration and Cape intensity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, intense colour that hints at the wine’s depth and power. The nose is highly appealing and layered, with notes of purple plums, violets, exotic spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, a touch of white pepper, and pure dark chocolate. The palate is rich, generous and full of fruit, yet remarkably supple and refined. Bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and balanced, while the mouth-filling tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated. The finish is long and fruit-driven, and the impressive structure suggests it will age gracefully for many years.

Production
Boekenhoutskloof is based in Franschhoek, one of South Africa’s most historic wine regions, where the estate traces its roots back to French Huguenot settlers over three centuries ago. Under Marc Kent, the winery has become known for producing some of the country’s most exciting premium wines, drawing inspiration from the northern Rhône and particularly Cornas. This Syrah is a top-tier cuvée shaped by careful vineyard selection and precise cellar work, resulting in a wine with both power and finesse.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, duck, venison, slow-cooked beef, or richly seasoned dishes such as black pepper steak and Moroccan-inspired cuisine. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended to allow the aromatics to unfold and the wine’s structure to soften.
