Description
Bodegas Granbazán’s Veigalobos 2019 is a singular single-vineyard Albariño that pushes the grape to its most precise and age-worthy expression. Sourced from a tiny 2.85-hectare parcel beside the Umia River, it combines maritime freshness, striking minerality, and remarkable tension in a style that stands among the region’s most serious white wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished pale gold hue. The nose is deeply layered and hard to resist, opening with mirabelle plums, yellow apple, citrus oil, and white rose petals, then unfolding into crushed oyster shell, mint, acacia blossom, fresh oregano, and a saline, balsamic edge.
The palate is structured and subtly creamy, yet driven by an almost electric acidity that gives the wine length, lift, and energy. Flavors of apricot, grapefruit, quince, pear compote, orange blossom, sea spray, and Mediterranean herbs are wrapped in delicate notes of fresh licorice, cashew, and newly baked bread. It is highly complex and built for aging, with the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully over many years.
Production
Veigalobos comes from Finca Cobas de Lobos, a very small single vineyard planted in sandy soils under a cool maritime influence near the banks of the Umia River. The long growing season allows for slow ripening and exceptional aromatic development. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before being fully de-stemmed, followed by four days of cold maceration to extract aroma, flavor, and a touch of structure. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine then spends 26 months on lees, adding depth, texture, and complexity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for oysters, scallops, grilled turbot, lobster, sea bass, sashimi, and refined dishes with citrus, herbs, or a lightly creamy sauce. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Bodegas Granbazán is one of the standout producers in Galicia and a benchmark name for serious Albariño. Known for combining modern precision with a deep respect for the Atlantic character of Rías Baixas, the estate has helped elevate the region’s reputation for world-class white wine. Veigalobos, first released with the 2018 vintage, reflects that ambition in a focused single-vineyard expression designed to showcase Albariño at its highest level.
