Bodegas Demencia de Autor’s Villegas 2020 is a site-specific Bierzo Mencía that captures the character of three tiny parcels in Valtuille de Abajo. Crafted from around 80-year-old vines and shaped by distinctive clay soils with a notable sandy component, it offers a vivid expression of old-vine Mencía with depth, freshness, and regional authenticity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is expected to show a deep, vibrant red color with the kind of concentration that comes from mature vines. The nose should be layered and refined, with ripe red and dark berries, floral Mencía perfume, and subtle earthy, spicy notes from its long élevage in French oak. On the palate, the wine is likely to balance richness with precision: juicy fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a fresh, lively line that keeps the wine focused. The 2020 vintage’s cooler finish should lend lift and balance, while the combination of old vines and careful aging suggests good development potential over the next several years.

Production
Villegas comes from three small parcels in Valtuille de Abajo, planted on rare clay soils with a significant sandy fraction at around 500 meters above sea level. The northeast-facing old vines benefit from morning sun and shelter from the most intense afternoon heat, a major advantage in the warm 2020 vintage. After two days of maceration, fermentation began spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel, followed by 24 months of maturation in French oak.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roast lamb, grilled Iberian pork, mushroom dishes, game birds, and hearty stews. It should be served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic complexity.
