Description
Bodegas Baigorri’s Rioja Crianza 2021 is a beautifully polished introduction to the modern Baigorri style: ripe, expressive fruit balanced by classic Rioja spice and structure. Sourced from old-vine parcels in Rioja Alavesa, it captures both freshness and depth, offering impressive quality well beyond its price point.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby color with a youthful sheen. The nose is generous and inviting, with dark cherries, blackberry, stewed forest berries, and a layer of black pepper, cigar box, smoked paprika, and licorice.
The palate is creamy and medium-bodied, yet firmly framed by fine tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. Flavors of violet-tinged cherry, plum, sweet spice, pipe tobacco, crushed stone, and roasted coffee bean carry through to a long, energetic finish. This is a Crianza with plenty of immediate charm, but it also has the structure to develop nicely over the next 3–5 years.
Production
The blend is led by 90% Tempranillo, complemented by 5% Garnacha and 5% other locally rooted varieties, all harvested from vines over 25 years old in Rioja Alavesa. The vineyards sit at around 550 meters above sea level on limestone and clay soils, helping preserve freshness, lift, and natural acidity. Farming is carried out using sustainable principles, with all grapes picked by hand and rigorously sorted at the winery.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, followed by 14 months of ageing in a combination of French oak (90%) and American oak (10%) barrels, which adds subtle spice and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine is a great match for roasted lamb, grilled beef, Iberian pork, duck, mushroom dishes, and tapas such as chorizo, ham, or braised vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C; decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended if you want to soften the tannins and bring out more of the wine’s layered aromatics.
