Bodega del Abad’s Gotín del Risc Cimabella Mencía 2020 is a polished expression of Bierzo’s signature red grape, combining ripe fruit, finesse, and the distinctive character of old vines. Produced in one of Spain’s most exciting wine regions, it reflects both the area’s unique microclimate and the winery’s modern, quality-driven approach.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Mencía shows a deep, attractive ruby color with good brightness. The nose is marked by expressive fruit, with layers of red and dark berries, and subtle hints of spice and oak adding complexity. On the palate, it is silky and refined, with a juicy fruit core, elegant structure, and impressive depth. The 12 months in French and American oak lend extra complexity without overshadowing the wine’s freshness. It has enough balance and concentration to evolve well over the next few years, gaining further nuance with time.

Production
The wine comes from Bierzo, where the blend of Atlantic and Mediterranean-continental influences creates a special microclimate ideal for Mencía. The vineyards sit at around 550 meters above sea level, and the vines are notably old, averaging 80 years, which helps produce concentrated, expressive fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months of maturation in French and American oak barrels.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red that works beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled lamb, mushroom dishes, and cured meats. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and rich tapas. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to let the aromas and texture fully open up.
