Description

Blain-Gagnard Pommard 2021 is a classic red Burgundy that marries Pommard’s trademark structure with an unexpectedly refined, floral lift. Sourced from old vines near the Volnay border, it offers both the density and backbone Pommard is known for and the perfume and finesse more typical of its elegant neighbor. This is a thoughtful, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that captures the character of the Côte de Beaune in a particularly nuanced vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pommard shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is inviting rather than brooding: aromas of black cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant are layered with dried rose petals, violets and a subtle herbal note reminiscent of thyme and underbrush, all framed by a discreet touch of oak spice. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied for Pinot, with the firm tannic spine that defines Pommard, yet the texture remains refined and finely grained. Juicy red and black berry fruit is joined by notes of forest floor, licorice and a gentle mineral edge that brings energy and length. The finish is persistent, with savory, slightly earthy nuances and a fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. Enjoyable in its youth after a bit of air, this 2021 has the structure to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in the cellar.

Production
Blain-Gagnard sources this Pommard from old-vine parcels rooted in clay-limestone soils that give both depth and tension to the wine, with the proximity to Volnay contributing a finer aromatic profile. The vineyards are farmed with great care, with yields kept low to concentrate flavor and express the nuances of the site. Harvest is done by hand, allowing careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and again at the winery. Vinification follows traditional Burgundian methods: gentle destemming, a cool pre-fermentation maceration to draw out color and aroma, followed by fermentation in open vats with regular punch-downs or pump-overs to manage extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a modest proportion of them new, to polish the tannins and add subtle spice without overshadowing the pure expression of Pinot Noir and Pommard’s distinctive terroir.

Food & Serving
This Pommard is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its structure while benefitting from its aromatic lift. Think roasted duck with cherries, braised beef or veal, coq au vin, herb-crusted lamb, or mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or a truffle-infused poultry dish. It also pairs beautifully with aged semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight both the fruit and the more delicate floral and herbal nuances. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open fully; as it ages, a gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before serving will suffice.

Producer
Domaine Blain-Gagnard is a respected, family-run estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy, known for crafting wines of precision, elegance and authenticity. Established when Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard combined their respective family vineyard holdings, the domaine has steadily built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and restrained, terroir-focused winemaking. While often associated with top white Burgundy from Chassagne, Blain-Gagnard also produces distinctive reds from appellations like Pommard that showcase the breadth of the Côte de Beaune. Their wines are prized by Burgundy enthusiasts for their purity of fruit, balanced use of oak and ability to reflect the subtle differences between neighboring villages, making this Pommard 2021 an insightful expression of both place and producer.
