Description
Bibbiano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montornello 2020 is a pure Sangiovese from one of the most characterful single vineyards in Castellina in Chianti. Classified as Gran Selezione – the highest tier in the Chianti Classico hierarchy – it is crafted only from estate-grown grapes and bottled in the best vintages. Montornello is known for giving wines of depth and precision; in cooler, wetter summers its structure becomes more refined and layered, adding an extra dimension of complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Montornello shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is expressive and elegant, weaving together aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange with floral notes of violet and rose, plus hints of dried herbs, cedar, tobacco leaf and a touch of warm earth.
On the palate, this Gran Selezione is focused and finely structured, with lively Sangiovese acidity wrapped around a core of juicy red fruit, subtle spice and savory undertones. Silky yet firm tannins give it grip and length without feeling heavy, while notes of sour cherry, plum skin, licorice and a delicate mineral edge carry through the long, poised finish. The balance of fruit, freshness and structure suggests excellent aging potential: it is approachable now with aeration, but will continue to develop greater complexity and harmony over the next 8–15 years.
Production
The Montornello vineyard lies on the historic Bibbiano estate in Castellina in Chianti, on sun‑favored slopes marked by classic Chianti Classico soils of galestro and alberese – rocky, well‑drained marl and limestone that naturally restrict yields and intensify flavor. Sangiovese is harvested by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the cellar door to ensure only the healthiest, ripest bunches make the cut for Gran Selezione. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature‑controlled tanks with careful extraction to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannin. The wine is then aged for an extended period in large oak casks and/or neutral tonneaux, allowing it to gain complexity and textural polish without overwhelming the grape’s natural character or the expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione pairs beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, ragù-based pasta (pappardelle al cinghiale, tagliatelle with beef or game), roasted pork with herbs, and aged Italian cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. It also works well with mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables and hearty poultry dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the aromatics open and softens the tannins; older bottles can be gently decanted mainly to separate any sediment.
Producer
Bibbiano is one of the oldest family‑owned estates in Chianti Classico, with documented winegrowing roots going back to the 19th century, and land records in Castellina that trace even further. Over generations, the family has championed Sangiovese and the distinctive terroir of their hillsides, becoming a respected reference point for traditional yet refined Chianti Classico. The estate is known for its careful vineyard work, increasing focus on organic and sustainable practices, and for bottling distinct single‑vineyard expressions like Montornello and Vigna del Capannino. Bibbiano’s wines frequently receive strong critical recognition and are valued for combining authenticity, regional typicity and aging potential.
